When a Las Vegas bodyguard with lethal skills and a gambling problem gets in trouble with the mob, he has one last play...and it's all or nothing. Wild Card might not be as bad as many might think but it's one of Statham's most forgettable films and even tho the Cast looks promising and does deliver in certain parts and the limited action is great the film feels conflicted threw a mediocre script that goes from fight scenes, to humor to poker and back again. Plus some actors like Tucci and Vergara get limited screen time which is bad because good talent gets wasted and overall the movie drags at times as well which makes it hard to sit threw the whole damn thing. Overall Wild Card has some great limited fight sequences, a great cast and Statham who is great as he is always but the end result is a forgettable Simon West Action Flick that didn't live up to expectations plus the man made Con-Air and The Expendables 2 so there's no excuse for this movie to be mediocre. (6/10)
... View MoreAs a work of "cinema," Wild Card is nothing special. There is unusual depth to Jason Statham's character and Stanley Tucci plays one of the nicest, kindest, and therefore most frightening mobsters ever. But there's no great drama or great emotional impact. As an "action thriller" it is better than most, but the fight scenes don't measure up to "Transporter 1".Fine, mindless entertainment but it lacks the non-stop action of some of Mr. Statham's other films.
... View MoreIn sport if you commit an infraction you may get a red card. In my view Wild Card is a cinematic infraction. Its end to end sleaze, with a down trodden Sam Slade wannabe lead character, taking on "da mob" in the ghastly, garish, gambling carnival side show known as Las Vegas. In spite of Jason Statham's presence in the lead role, there's really nothing to like here. The film has a pervading sense of hopelessness and "no-hoperiness" about it, that's just depressing. The characters are either criminals or losers and there is not a lot in between. As such, its hard to really empathize with the key characters as their blatantly stupid, irresponsible actions, have obvious consequences. The action scenes are OK but at the same time predictable and recycled to a degree, that's simply not all that exciting. My advice, don't place a bet on this action pot boiler as its likely to disappoint. Four out of ten from me.
... View MoreI'm usually quite intrigued by Jason Statham's movies because he has this likable essence about him, and he usually plays a super bad-ass (If I'm allowed to say that..) but I feel that this movie was lacking in many areas. Most of the characters were seemingly 2 dimensional and hardly believable; the only 2 characters you really learn a bit about is "Nick Wild" played by Jason Statham and "Cyrus Kinnick" played by Michael Angarano; beside these 2 individuals, everybody else felt so paper- thin and out of place. There were a lot of scenarios in this film that seemed quite pointless because they didn't exactly fit in and the characters also felt pointless, and we had no idea who these individuals were as people because we didn't learn any details about them; they felt like small-time scenes to fill the gaps to meet the runtime requirements. I liked "Cassandra", the blonde waitress whom Wild seemed to fancy, though the chemistry between those two never really went anywhere because at the end, Wild got into a car and drove off, followed by credits. I was hoping for a more in depth conclusion, but it felt rushed, which made it uninteresting and unexpected (in a bad way). The most entertainment I got from this film was Statham's fight scenes. Once again, his "don't mess with me" vibe was brilliant to watch, but besides these moments, the film as a whole was a pretty big flop (in my opinion)..The film had potential but felt rushed and messy. Disappointing and sub-standard screenplay. 4/10
