I've seen plenty of Stephen King adaptations in my time, but BIG DRIVER has to be one of the very worst. It's based on a novella by the author and had a screenplay written by Richard Christian Matheson, no less, but that doesn't make it any good; it turns out that this was a television movie, which may go some way in explaining the horrible execution. You know those films which attempt to be serious but feel false and half-hearted instead? That's the case here. BIG DRIVER skirts the usual TV movie problems by offering explicit adult material, but the storyline is very unsatisfying and it turns out to be a King version of a simple 'rape revenge' storyline a la THE BRAVE ONE.Maria Bello has never been one of the most interesting actresses and things are no different here. There are the usual kooky Stephen King elements added to the plot - and of course, the main character just HAS to be a successful author - but it's all so insipid, so stupid, that I could barely watch it. A far cry from the glory days of SALEM'S LOT and CARRIE, this one.

"Big Driver", is a Stephen King TV movie. For a Lifetime flick it has some spunk. Maria Bello playing a famous writer saves the day in this revenge thriller.. You knew it was a revenge movie didn't you? Joan Jett played a bartender and did a good job also. It was good to see her.. Fritz the cat played his part very well being snuggley and purring on Q. This movie surprised me. It kept me interested.. Just when I thought Stephen King was pass'e. I believe casting is very important..and what goes around comes around... It looked like it was filmed somewhere in Connecticut. I thought I recognized route 84 past the Hartford area maybe up near Union..Favorite line is, "The lighting out here is downright smuggie". ...Hey, its a good movie.. Check it out..

Watched the movie despite the reviews because of Steven King's writing it. Couldn't believe I'd seen the same move - it was a good exercise in psychology. To briefly over the story, a successful author is raped. She avoids telling anyone because she fears retribution, both professional and personal. She soon start hunting her assailant. Some of her behavior isn't helpful or rational. Many times you catch the 'heroine' hallucinating, so was she making it all up? Is she the real killer? The tension was well-done. The plot twists were credible and added to the suspense. So what were the detractors watching?? OK, it wasn't a big-budget movie, but it was certainly entertaining.

SPOILER: I always thought a TV-movie meant suitable for all the family. Is it me or has the standard for what is classed a TV movie changed? I really like this movie although to start with, I almost gave up watching it because it looked too perfect ..living the dream etc...not much happening except small dramas, I mistakenly thought it was one of those "TV movies". Then there was some bad language, the rape, attempted murder, dead bodies, and revenge which was all the more entertaining without interference from other parties eg the police. But this message here of not calling the police is surely not a message to tell the masses? I love good revenge films such as this one but this film loses a star for being described as a TV or cable-movie.
