The Movie Diorama

The top spot goes to Unknown with Non-Stop in third position. In Run All Night, a father estranged from his son saves his life but at a consequence of provoking his oldest friend. How far will he go to protect his own blood and family? It might sound generic, and to be honest I was not entirely captivated in my original viewing. Now that I've revisited this, I can say there is something about it that stands out. Jaume Collet-Serra's direction. He turned a formulaic and predictable crime thriller into a flashy and technically fluent piece of cinema. The amount of different camera styles utilised is quite the achievement. Quick cuts for the action, long rotational takes for dialogue, freeze frames and slow motion, city traversal scenes that are sped up and the occasional POV perspectives. It's technically acute, and it is this that enhances the thriller as a whole. Then you add in Neeson, who is already a dependant rejuvenated action star, to bring in audiences. He does occasionally enter his typical "badass" role that he is now known for but the first act enabled him to convey a troubled and aged hitman with a tainted past. Throughout its entirety there is a gritty undertone that gets under your skin. New York City has never looked so hauntingly majestic at night yet simultaneously ever so terrifying. The supporting cast were functional, I liked Common as a professional hitman. Joel Kinnaman was mediocre as always and Ed Harris needed more screen time. Plenty of memorable scenes including a shootout in a bar, secluded woods and an intense urban car chase. All filmed excellently, with perhaps slightly too many quick cuts in the brawls. The main story is generic, however it works. The aesthetic and technical artistry overlaps the predictable plot and creates the illusory effect of freshness. I admire that. It's unfortunate this did not do well in its theatrical run, I think it will appreciated more as time goes on.

I had a hard time bringing myself to watch 'Run All Night'. I think a large part of the reason for that is that all Liam Neeson thrillers these days feel interchangeable. He plays basically the same character in them all and they all follow a pretty similar and formulaic story line. While I did enjoy 'Run All Night' for the most part, this did certainly hold true again. There isn't anything particularly unique about this film. It's just another solid, yet flawed, action/thriller starring Neeson. The action is the strongest part of this film. There are some good sequences throughout the movie, the stand-out being the early car chase with the cop car, where the usual roles are reversed. There is also an 'R' rating which helps improve the film in certain scenes. The violence is reasonably heavy throughout and this brings a good level of intensity to the film. The flaws though are plentiful. The role of 'Andrew Price' played by Common made no sense at all. He was brought in as a "professional killer" who is supposed to be the best at what he does. However, in every scene he's in he's absolutely terrible at what he does. You have to see the film to fully appreciate what I'm talking about, but it's unbelievably poor directing. Another problem lies in the fact that there are zero likable characters. Everyone in this film is highly flawed in almost every way and that makes it very hard to root for anyone. You're supposed to root for Neeson, simply because he's Liam Neeson, but anyone who stops and thinks about that for a moment will realise it doesn't make any sense to do so.I still managed to enjoy 'Run All Night' for the most part, but I fear it will be pretty forgettable. I would really like to see Neeson push himself if he's going to continue putting out these action/thrillers every year. Change his character and the formula of the story up a bit to keep it fresh. Until he does that, I'm going to have a hard time getting excited about any of them.

Liam Neesons 64, and he still kicks butt in all sorts of different ways. Run All Night is a mob action thriller which is really good, tense and out of this world. seeing bad guys getting knocked down/killed in just on night we haven't seen anything like that before. I really like Run All Night, it focuses on friends and family also revenge in one whole night. This is why Liam gives a great performance, as the good one alongside Ed Harris as the bad guy. The thing that really picks out in this action thriller is that these two are old time long best friends which gives us an interesting view of what will happen next in the movie.Run All Night is dark and not off putting. it keeps you on the edge of your seat from start to finish. this should be a 8/10 it has great action scenes great drama great directing and powerful acting. This movie is nothing Like Liams earlier ones like Taken or Unknown everybody should know he dose not do the same in his movies.Run All Night i Highly recommend a watch, with a powerful lead cast especially by Liam Neeson It will go well in Your DVD collation. (if you have one).

This film has one major strength – the beautiful photography from Martin Rhue. Otherwise it is a pretty ordinary brutal gangster drama with plenty of violence, lots of "tough guy" talk, accompanied by stabbing, shooting, strangling, and thumping. There is the requisite car chase sequence that is hard to believe, just as it is hard to believe that a hopeless drunk and washed-up hit man can suddenly transform into a death dealing-fighting machine who takes on all comers and kills them all.Films like this require some suspension of belief, but this one requires too much. The acting is pretty good, although Bruce McGill is completely wasted and Joel Kinnaman is really not suited to the role.
