The brain child of Michael Schur, The Good Place (2016) is a great show that envisions a unique and hilariously logical version of the afterlife. The performances are on point. Kirsten Bell is fantastic in the lead role of Eleanor, who is a bit of an anti-hero and rule breaker. Dang, she sells it. The other standout is Ted Danson. No surprise of course, due to his unparalleled work on Cheers! The rest of the cast slips right into their roles with gusto and fantastic personality. And I just have to mention that the first standout is undoubtedly Marc Evan Johnson, who plays Shawn. The writing is consistently inventive and constantly hilarious. Mike Schur crafted a pilot that had a plethora of possibilities and man do the writers have a blast with it, as does the audience.Smart, funny, and inventive are three key words that slip into The Good Place (2016) consistently. 10/10
... View MoreI love the exploration of the afterlife, particularly the phenomenally absurd standards for entry, a major flaw in the whole idea IMO. Further the cast is packed full of chemistry: Ted Danson and Kristen Bell are fantastic in every scene they're in, while Jameela Jamil is enchanting in her posh ignorance (the nose-boops were adorkable). Have to give props also to William Jackson Harper for making ethics lectures not horrible, and to D'Arcy Carden for bringing that same endearing naivety to the all knowing Janet as Zoie Palmer did for the android in Dark Matter. But the show does have one flaw, and his name is Jason Mendoza. He is a cartoon character, and while I recognize the satire in the series, he is just too unbelievably stupid to exist. He is Hitchcock and Scully from Brooklyn Nine-Nine smooshed together, but less weirdly likable. This is no fault of Manny Jacinto, it's just the writing. He reminds me of a childhood friend who always pretended to be stupid to try to get a laugh: It was never funny. Fortunately he is mostly just used as a foil for the other characters, but while the rest of the cast grows and learns and evolves, he just... doesn't, and this becomes more of a problem as the series progresses.9/10 Stars, great show with one character that the writers could have put some more work into.
... View MoreThe show is very plot driven and quickly declines after the big twist is revealed. The characters are not that interesting or funny, except for Janet. She's the only thing - not a girl - that makes the show worth watching.
... View MoreI started watching for Kristen Bell and I'm hooked. It's a great concept with fantastic writing and makes you think while you connect to the characters.
