Relic Hunter stars Tia Carrere, Christien Anholt and Lindy Booth. This series was a great favourite when I was at school. I always looked forward to watching new episodes when I came home from school. If you like the Indiana Jones films then this series is one for you.Professor Sydney Fox(Tia Carrere)teaches archaeology. Sydney travels around the world looking for ancient artefacts to display, accompanied by her friend Nigel(Christien Anholt).Sydney and Nigel must fight off rival hunters who only want the artefacts to sell on for money.Sydney is an independent and tough woman, skilled in martial arts and she has no difficulty dealing with tough situations. I love the friendship between her and Nigel, he has a crush on her but can never seem to find a way to tell her. Lindy Booth also stars as Sydney's secretary Claudia. The series is a good blend of adventure, action and thrills. I love the theme music too.

What I actually learned from this series is that, allover the world, steam trains are still used and no one, except America and Scotland, ever heard of electric trains. Also, outside America, England, Germany and France, people are still using 1950s cars as a mean of transportation, especially when it comes to taxi cars. Speaking of cars, this is how I know that the Romania related episodes were not actually filmed in Romania, as there was no Dacia 1310 car on the streets, plus the plate numbers were not Romanian style. However, the banners from "Bucharest" were in Romanian and also those used on Hungary related episodes were in Hungarian. Other than that, it was a pretty good show, although I was pretty curious to see, in the end, how Sydney would destroy the infamous Gurel Nataz.

The series is made by a Canadian company, and has a different look and feel from its Hollywood adventure / action counterparts. The series may have been inspired by Eidos' "Tomb Raider" game that was popular around the time this series was made.Professor Sydney Fox works for the archeology department at Trinity College - a fictitious school in "north east" area of Americas (which can be either in Canada, or the US). She spends most of her time relic hunting that takes her to many exotic locations around the world. She's an expert in ancient cultures, and martial arts. She's accompanied by her assistant Nigel Baley who's intelligent, but aren't nearly as tough as she is. In most episodes she goes into a somewhat scary situation where she and Nigel has to fend for their lives using their charm, intelligence, and martial arts skills. The episodes are much more story driven compared to American made TV series of this type. Ethnic mixture of part Hawaiian Tia Cerrerie, British Christien Anholt, and Canadian Lindy Booth (Tanja Reichert in the third season) is also unique in TV series. What's stellar about this series is it's production. The producers of this series knew what they were doing. The characters, the stories, and the location are all superbly in good taste that holds up to repeat viewing. One very honorable mention goes to the series' cinematographer. You can freeze frame any part of the episode, and they all look like a perfectly framed, and exposed Kodachrome shot. No messed up computer graphics, or effects to kill the atmosphere of the story, and this in my opinion is one of the attraction of this series.Stories are great, acting is great, so no wonder there's still a fan base to this series that's requesting more episodes to be made. If they are going to make another series, I'd like to request the original team that made these episodes come back, because the look and feel of the series was superb. This is one of the best television series, and deserves further development in the future.

Yes, Relic Hunter is just an inferior Indiana Jones rip-off, but let's face it, there are very few truly original TV shows out there and if you're going to rip something off it might as well be the best. The show's formula may become a little repetitive after a while but it is good light entertainment, something that it's easy to dip in and out of, only seeing the occasional episode, which makes it superior to all those American TV series for which you need to invest hours of effort for very little return. Tia Carrere delivers a generally strong performance as Sydney and it is always good to see intelligent, in control, ass-kicking women on TV. Plus Relic Hunter has the jewel in it's crown of the bumbling stereotype that is Nigel. For anyone who finds ridiculous American stereotypes of the way English people are, Nigel is a must, he's hilarious, only sometimes intentionally, and the actor playing him is kind of cute.
