Yes, I was once a 9-year-old who would 'yee-haw' in front of the TV every Friday night. But then I grew up and basically forgot about the Dukes of Hazzard. Years later, when I learned of the movie, I scoffed. I had zero expectations and no plans to see it. Then months later, I ran into it on HBO. This movie is a blast. Anyone looking for a dusty museum exhibit to replay the original series for a new generation will be disappointed. But It's great fun for anyone willing to be in on the joke and go along for the ride.Boss Hogg isn't fat. Uncle Jesse smokes weed. Roscoe is less cartoon bumbling, more cartoon menacing. Daisy is blonde. The General's paint job needs... explaining. But the movie retains everything that made the original series work: car chases, bar brawls, short-shorts and good-hearted outlaws looking out for the good folks of Hazzard County. The movie brings back all these crucial elements... and then takes them out and gets them drunk. Buckle up for safety! The plot is an inch deep, but gets the job done. The humor is perfectly simple and perfectly funny. And, aside from Burt Reynolds, the cast aren't winning any Oscars (ever), but they can handle these characters just fine. Lastly, I had no idea how much I missed the General Lee. I'm not a car guy or an action-for-the-sake-of-action guy, but the car chases, crashes and jumps in this movie are incredible. Most modern action scenes are just noise and blur, but the driving-action scenes in this movie are extremely well-paced and well-executed. I could replay the car chase in Atlanta (with Bo in emotional crisis behind the wheel) a hundred times and never stop loving that scene.I was truly surprised how much I enjoyed this movie - both times (thanks, Netflix!), with about 10 years between viewings. The big screen version of The Dukes of Hazzard actually works, and no one was more surprised than me.Now how do you think them boys are going to top this one?
... View MoreNot as bad as everyone says this movie is.************************************************The first thing I notice when I read all of the negative comments about this movie, the writer always points out that he or she was a HUGE fan of the show way back when.........One of the things You have to remember is that absence makes the heart grow fonder.......and with the Dukes of Hazzard TV Show being off of the air since the mid '80's ...these people have watched reruns over and over and these probably undoubtedly remember the TV show as being far better than it actually was(or at least in their minds anyway). ******************************************************************** *I liked the Dukes of Hazzard movie. I liked the sex jokes (I was slightly disappointed that there was no serious nudity shown in the film). I thought the drug humor was indeed funny (not enough of it)BUT! ! ! ! having said that......... I also believe they could have made this same movie and not have used the "Dukes of Hazzard" name, likeness or characters .... Because I also understand that "Dukes of Hazzard" has a lot of appeal to children(mainly boys between ages 10 and 14) , and to use the Dukes of Hazzard as a show case for "Sex, Drugs, & Rock'N Roll" really isn't the message we should be giving our youths. Showing the Duke boys smoking weed and getting laid probably wasn't the right thing to do..............although I really did like this movie and thought it was very funny, I still think that they should've made this movie with it's own identify. Because this same movie could've been made without the Dukes of Hazzard name on it, and it would have been just as good.
... View MoreBased on the American television series of the same name, 'The Dukes of Hazzard' is, at best, a passable comedy that's funny in bits. 'The Dukes of Hazzard' Synopsis: Cousins Bo and Luke Duke, with a little help from their cousin Daisy and Uncle Jesse, egg on the authorities of Hazzard County, Boss Hogg and Sheriff Coltrane.'The Dukes of Hazzard' has a racy first-hour, but a dull second. The comedy as well as the stunts work in the first-hour, but everything comes down in the final hour. Even the climax, for that matter, is far from euphoric. The Screenplay is certainly funny in parts, but loses steam later-on. Jay Chandrasekhar's Direction is standard. Cinematography & Editing are fair.Performance-Wise: Johnny Knoxville & Seann William Scott are entertaining. Jessica Simpson looks gorgeous, but gets no scope. Burt Reynolds is pretty solid as the antagonist. On the whole, 'The Dukes of Hazzard' is passable.
... View MoreFor all of the pans and low ratings, "The Dukes of Hazzard" turned out to be a pleasant surprise. Granted, if I were a "Dukes" purist (I'm not), then I'd be pretty miffed at the changes that were made for this movie. And it's not without its problems. For one, the characters of Boss Hogg and Roscoe P. Coltrane are all wrong. Second, the occasional comments on the General Lee in modern society get old. But they did pretty well on the casting front; two likable Duke boys, David Koechner's a good Cooter, and Willie Nelson makes for a novel Uncle Jessie. Plus, there's a rock-solid soundtrack for the car chases. The Broken Lizard cameos were pretty cool. And thankfully, they didn't feel the need to change or update the General (thank god for that). There are smarter ways to spend your time, but that's just it: the TV show wasn't all that smart to begin with ... but it was fun. And I think the filmmakers got that. And speaking for myself, I'm here for the car. Always have been. And there's no shortage of bridge jumps, chase scenes or other General Lee mayhem, so they've got my vote. That is one bitchin' ride.7/10
