The Devil's Tomb is an undefendable piece of moldy crap no matter how you look at it, a slipshod, incoherent, cheap looking mess of a flick. It's somewhat of an amusement to watch a handful of talented actors blunder theur way through it, pursuing a pay cheque on a fishing line being dangled somewhere near the window shot of their time on set. The 'plot' follows a team of mercenaries headed up by Cuba Gooding Jr. and Taryn Manning, sent into an underground research facility, where scientists have uncovered... I dunno. Something. I couldn't figure it out and still have no idea, and I feel like the filmmakers don't either. An evil force of some kind which moves from host to host, starting off with Bill Moseley, looking like a deadite coming off a heroin bender. Murky gunfights, cheesy special effects and nonsensical silliness abound, making most Asylum released movies look like Oscar gold. Ron Perlman plays a researcher who has been tainted by the evil, giving him a golden ticket to ham up his performance royally. Henry Rollins, of all people, yells and screams a lot as a distraught priest who thinks the gates of hell have been opened. Ray Winstone, who is usually nowhere to be found in muck like this, has a sheepish cameo as some soldier dude who Gooding sees in flashbacks. Man, I waited for this one so long after its announcement on IMDb, bought a copy (wasn't cheap) the week it came out, and sat there watching it, wanting to flip the coffee table. None of it makes sense, no one seems to know what they're even hunting or running from, except bankruptcy. If, after my glowing review, you decide to give it a go, just take comfort in the fact that you can laugh at these otherwise esteemed actors taking a turd-bath in mediocrity, kind of like beholding your friends in the midst of some ill advised, incredibly inebriated shenanigans. You've been warned.

View MoreNever heard about this movie prior to actually sitting down to watch it, so I had no hopes or expectations to the movie, which I suppose was good in its own way.The story told in "The Devil's Tomb" is, well, kind of boring. It is something that seems very much like something that has been used for another movie, somewhere, somehow, sometime. A group of elite soldiers are sent into some underground complex on a mission without any real details, and something sinister is brooding in the belly of the world. Uuhhh, so very, very spooky. Not! Actually the movie plot was very easy to follow and required very little brain activity at any time. There were no surprise or plot twists to throw you off along the way. Now, I said elite soldiers, well, let's take a moment and rephrase that, make it a bunch of ordinary soldiers, because there were so many questionable things they did that just made you wonder what kind of training they had actually received. But, don't get me wrong. The movie is not all bad, just the story is a bit weak and not really coming off as plausible. The setting of the movie, however, was really cool. There was a sense of brooding doom around every corner, and also a good sense of claustrophobia. And these elements worked very well for the movie. Now, I also think that they had managed to get together some pretty interesting people to play the characters in the movie. I was especially surprised when I saw Bill Moseley's name appear in the intro, and already there I was sort of looking forward to sitting through the movie. And when you finally got to see Moseley, it was all worth it. He looked so cool in this movie and played a very nice role, though it was only a small role. And I also think that Jason London was really cool in this movie, he was really living into the role and making his character stand out on the screen. And of course Henry Rollins in the role of the priest, now that was just priceless. And not forgetting to mention the lovely Stephanie Jacobsen, she was also a nice touch to the movie. Now, you might say I forgot to mention Ron Perlman, but no, I am not a particular fan of his work, and this performance wasn't anything out of his ordinary work. And as for Cuba Gooding Jr., well again, it was just an average performance here.I was thoroughly entertained throughout the movie, despite the lack of meat on the storyline, but there was just something about the movie that wanted you to make it all the way to the end. The ending, though, was sort of anti-climatic in the worst sense possible.Don't expect anything grand from this movie, and you won't be disappointed. Good enough for an evening's worth of entertainment, but not solid enough for a second watching. And as for the title of the movie, "The Devil's Tomb", wow? Without giving away too much of the story, why this title? That didn't really make any sense!
... View MoreThe Devil's Tomb feels like one of those cheap DTV horror films, only with a big name cast. It's been done many times before in DTV films, maybe not as bad, but it's still not very good. It feels very cheap looking, with Cuba looking silly with a mad scowl on his face throughout the movie, he doesn't look too pleased to be there. The effects themselves are good for its budget, but it's too overly gory with the way it's done, with a ridiculous amount of blood coming from the evil characters, it felt too over the top. This isn't as awful as Way Of War, but Cuba is much too good to be starring in the type of junk that Seagal is putting out now-a days. The action is very sparse, with a lot of junky dialog to sit through and characters I didn't give a damn about. I really don't know what happened to Cuba's career, but I hope he revives it soon, because watching such a talented actor like him flounder in this type of garbage is just sad.Performances. Cuba Gooding Jr. isn't very good here. He walks around with an annoyed scowl throughout the movie, and sleepwalks through the whole thing. Taryn Manning is OK as The Doc, but her character is highly unlikable. Jason London is OK, but doesn't have a whole lot to do. Henry Rollins isn't much better. Ron Perlman must have needed a pay-check, same goes to Ray Winstone.Bottom line. Sad days for Cuba Gooding, but being the fan I am I'll continue to view his work, I just hope he lives up to his potential once again. Movie is not recommended3/10
