Steven Seagal stars in a horror film where he has to battle against vampires ! The premise alone made me want to watch this and it wasn't until I came to this site that I found out this was Seagal's first horror movie . The downside to AGAINST THE DARK is that if it wasn't for the dubious star name in the cast then the film wouldn't have much appeal outside the hard core horror market . It's one of those movies that differs very little than most of the other ones broadcast on SyFy and The Horror Channel It's unoriginal and derivative and in this case owes an awful lot to 28 WEEKS LATER with characters trying to escape a lair populated by infected creatures and an army officer on the outside wanting to sterilize the area regardless of whether people are infected or not . What I find difficult to believe is that the film cost 7 million dollars because there's a very limited number of small sets which are poorly lit and a small cast with no well known faces except for Seagal and Keith David . So was this film made as a tax scam or what . Even if it cost half that there's no way it would have made a profit
... View MoreSo, um... what's new in Steven Seagal's films? Believe it or not, he has a zombie-vampire film in his collection. Released in 2009, and before that we had a pleasure to see some new generation vampire films and TV series... And obviously, Seagal, seeing that his career is fading away, pretty fast with all of these straight to DVD films, I bet he decided to appear in vampire-zombie film to attract audience. But, it's also a straight to DVD film,(with Seagal in title, nevertheless) so don't expect that this piece of crap will attract anyone. Yes, well, being a Seagal fan, I watched it just to see what is this all about... and I was pretty surprised how Seagal films can't go down the drain even more. Seagal is the leader of the special mercenary team that hunts zombie-vampires, or whatever the hell they are... The film reminds you somewhat on "29 Weeks Later"... or something like that, there is this disease that spreads in post-apocalyptic world... it doesn't even look like post-apocalypse, not even by long shot, how did everybody turn into vampire-zombies? But, that's not matter in Steven Seagal film, we expect Aikido from this guy, right? Good, but no Aikido here, just sword waving, slow, monotone posture and no acting whatsoever. Other actors didn't even try to do something out of their performances... we got Linden Ashby here (Johnny Cage from Mortal Kombat), who did a lousy performance, you can easily see that this guy's career is fading away too... Keith David is also here, and he was definitively the best actor in the film, and this guy has a powerful career. Plot is boring, action is nothing special... everything else... crap. Don't waste your time with this. Except if you want to cure your insomnia.
... View MoreA virus spreads and makes people everywhere go mad with a blood thirst rage. Many people are trapped through out the city and the few that survive are fighting for their lives. There is also a group of "hunters" led by Steven Seagal and the hunters are killing these infected with sword and guns. The government is also involved and ready to bomb the city and kill whats left and hope the hunters get the survivors and themselves out first.I have seen so many movies like this with 28 Days Later coming to mind first. The movie tried ripping off Balde as far as the action goes, but it is way better than Blade cause that movie sucked. It also had a very Day Of The Dead feel to it. Keep in mind though that these are infected people who crave blood and don't like sunlight, but they are not vampires or zombies. They talk and they think and they plan and organize, they are smart. Why the hunters didn't just use machine guns is a good question, as most seemed rather easy to kill. They claimed at times not wanting to use guns for the sake of not making noise, but yet after fighting with swords for 10 minutes they usually ended up shooting one anyway...very silly. The directing was really bad at times here and the very unoriginal story mixed with bad directing makes for a bad movie. Seagal was the star although he wasn't on screen a lot. He is known for his three titled straight to video flops so I guess he was an appropriate choice. This movie ripped off tons of movies, and uses the hospital from Stephen Kings Kingdom Hospital miniseries and even uses clips from that film. It also references Day of the Dead which it obviously rips off at times. I also hate how the lead girl favors Kristen Stewart of Twilight fame, that was a cheesy marketing move. I did like Keith David in his small role because I am a fan of his. This movie offers nothing new, it wasn't horrible but it definitely wasn't great...I will honestly say I would recommend it to people with a warning attached, that you've seen this before, but it is okay.. The creatures never got scary nor did it focus on any of them long enough for you to get a feel of what they were. One key ingredient in making these films work is having a creature/zombie/vampire or whatever having a reoccurring part all through the movie to keep people looking and waiting for them. 3/10 stars, good for a one time viewing and nice to see Seagall smacking around on some fanged men.
... View MoreShort and simple, it was annoying. A decent movie with some cool camera techniques, but it was un-original and very irritating. The characters were complete idiots. The little girl was annoying, the women were quite stupid, and the men were failures (except for the two hunters). Without spoiling anything, this was basically how it went every time: 4 people are together. 1 of them goes to explore ahead. A zombie comes. The other 3 instantly "run!" without even helping the other person. Oh look, that 1 person killed the zombie, so they can move on. Wait, the other 3 ran back to where they started from and now they're all split up. Too bad.Complete idiots. They deserved to die. By the mid-section of the movie, I was rooting for the zombies. That aside, the rest was okay. Nothing great, but an average movie just to enjoy. Definitely bloody and gory, the action scenes were great, and it had a cliché but watchable plot. All together it's not too shabby, not great, completely annoying, but watchable.
