Sherlock Gnomes was as average of a sequel as you can find. There wasn't anything very special about it, not much to look back on. It was just very average. Sherlock Gnomes took the average success of Gnomeo and Juliet and combined that with the actual success of Sherlock Holmes and just smashed the two together. Very similar to Lego video games. They just change the way that the same exact movie is presented. Due to this, they are banking on the success and fanbase of the original movie to go and see this adaptation. Sherlock Gnomes was an average interpretation at best. There were some good Sherlock Holmes moments, but everything between was bland and uneventful. Pair all of this with an art style and quality that wasn't the highest, and you get a low budget, low success, average movie. Expect more cheap gnome knock-offs.
... View MoreYay, my first review. Only because this week I managed to watch one of the worst movies ever and went to my usually trustworthy site and reviewers at imdb and now I can relate my confusion to Sherlock Gnomes users reviews. My kids loved it and yeah they didn't pick up on everything but what kid does in these cartoon movies nowadays? Where producers try to amuse adult sense of humor and occupy the minds of children. It was definitely better than a "1" and worthy of a "6". What do you know, a cartoon movie with lots of chaos, a bad guy and cute minion like characters...yeah not original but then again, which cartoon movies are now? So now the confusion. Bone Tomahawk has a 7.1?! That movie was numbing as in "should I start watching Tombstone or some Rob Zombie movie because either apart from each other would have more substance than this soup sandwich." Great actors and terrible acting, how is that possible?! Well, Bone Tomahawk makes it possible. So I know everyone has their own opinions and mindset but just in relation to being the last two movies I went IMDb for answers where these two...I can say that confidence in people is fading.
... View More(Sigh) . . . Lacking, would be my one word review of "Sherlock Gnomes". Though the animation itself is nice, the basic story and lacklustre script will probably leave most of the children in the audience bored, let alone the adults. The vocal performances are a mixed bag. With Gnomeo and Juliet effectively sidelined for a lot of the film, their performers (James McAvoy and Emily Blunt) probably give the flattest turns, but this does allow for Johnny Depp and, particularly, Jamie Demetriou to shine as Holmes and Moriaty respectively. There is a song crowbarred in around the middle of the picture from Mary j Blige's Irene Adler, which is as inexplicable as it is awful. In fact, music in general it a bit of a problem for the film - with a few bars of various Elton John hits piped into certain scenes, but it's like hearing a panpipe version in a lift, recognisable but not entertaining. There is, as I say, some nice animation but there aren't nearly enough gags that land, and certainly not enough that would appeal to any of the older kids / adults in the audience.
