Another movie should be made that is based on Fredric Dannen's article which is titled "revenge of the green dragons" (published by The New Yorker, Nov, 16, 1992). The problem with this movie is that it is often too gory (or semi-gory depending on your definition) and violent. Instead of depicting a more realistic story it shows an overly sensationalized image of the gang. Sure, some of these events might have happened, however that doesn't mean that you have to show it in the way that they did. This would have been a decent fictional gory/overly violent gang movie if it was not based on the article that appeared in The New Yorker. Moreover, on numerous occasions i thought that the scenes were totally unrealistic, which prevented me from having that immersed film experience. You know, those moments where one is like "really?!?!". Additionally, there where scenes in which the acting - from certain secondary cast members - was unconvincing. Overall, i give it a 4/10.

For a movie I knew nothing about and had only read a generic one-sentence description, this film turned out to be a good movie! The story is entertaining and fascinating, the violence is story driven and not unnecessarily used but while the movie did start out entertaining, it did start to lose it's way after the halfway point. There is very little action, it's mostly drama driven, but there is a graphic torture scene. It's well acted mostly by unknowns (well to me anyway) with the only people I knew were Harry Shum Jr (Glee) and Ray Liotta (Goodfellas). There is twist at the end and because it's based on a true story, there are some details on where some the characters are now. This is a film that is okay to watch once but I don't see myself watching it again.

Revenge of the Green Dragons is US debut of Hong Kong's celebrated director, Wai-Keung Lau (who co-directs) famous for Infernal Affairs.Revenge of the Green Dragons has Martin Scorsese as Executive Director. Scorsese won a Best Director Oscar for The Departed which was the American remake of Infernal Affairs, so he repays the favour. The film follows Sonny and Steven, two Chinese immigrant kids who become best friends and become involved with a Triad gang called The Green Dragons in 1980s New York. The films see these two friends rise amongst these ruthless gangsters and eventually Steven makes a fatal mistake while Sonny has had enough of the senseless violence and abuse such as the casual rape of Chinese women. The film's narration overpowers the film. It looks cheap with horrible cinematography. The acting is two dimensional and so is the script. You would not think this film is made by a legend of Hong Kong cinema. You might as well watch Year of the Dragon if you want to see a superior film about Chinese gangsters in America.

I watched this with my wife who is from Hong Kong (while I am a whitey who grew up in Australia). This movie, while based on true events, has a very similar and predictable feel to many of the Hong Kong gang films in Cantonese that we've seen together. The main difference being, despite having dozens of Chinese actors, nearly all the dialog is in English and the film is set in New York. Anyway, my wife gave it 6/10 because she knew what was going to happen before it happened as she's watched more of these movies than me. I give it 7/10.However, while the film had this feeling of predictability for the most part, the ending has a plot twist that neither of us saw coming. There is strong violence in this movie and a torture scene that I found a bit disturbing, so stay clear if you don't like that sort of stuff.
