It's been done so many times before, I didn't have high expectations going into this film. I have to now say, it's one of the best war action drama thrillers! This film is brilliant in every aspect; directing, screenplay, cinematography, editing and acting. My only critique would be some loose plot issues and I would have liked to see some more character development.Aside from that, a fun thrilling ride that is a must see film. It's a 9/10 from me.

This movie had some raw, redeeming qualities, illustrating the brutality of a country torn apart by conflict. The action sequences were well directed, and the cinematography offered a sense of gritty realism. The realism of what the main character experienced was refreshing, but the overall lack of a clear story (start, middle, end), combined with underdeveloped characters, and unexplained events/relationships made for an underwhelming experience.

This movie manages to be thrilling throughout as the character tries to survive the Troubles. However, the last 20 minutes or so unnecessarily overcomplicates the plot with contrived twists. Also, a more minor flaw, but the characters could've been developed a bit more.I appreciate the realism in many of the parts of the movie, such as the inept bomb handler. Handling bombs isn't always easy.+ Thrilling+ Realism to itFlawed plot in last 20 minutesCharacters could be a little betterI can't give it the best rating, so I'll give it a 7.

Excellent film that apparently was very popular and naturally important in the UK, but not in the USA. A war film from the Northern Ireland conflict. As others have commented, I'm glad this is not a typical Hollywood offering. Jack O'Connell is a young star to be paying attention to. This the second film I watch where he's the lead and I think he's going to shine quite a bit over the next few years, if he gets given the opportunity. This is a film for those who like serious historical movies. War is so convoluted and horribly tragic. Will make you want to learn more about what happened until rather recently in Northern Ireland.
