Behind the Hollywood Bowl stage which is playing the opera The Barber of Seville, Bugs Bunny flees into the backstage area with Elmer Fudd in close pursuit. Seeing his opportunity to fight on his terms, Bugs raises the curtain on Elmer, trapping him on stage. This short is a high water mark for animation and, I dare say, art in the 20th century. As a child, I remember my first realization of what "genius" truly meant was from a scene in this cartoon. When Bugs is massaging Elmer's head and Bugs' feet come up to help in the massage I remember feeling a level of humor beyond anything I had experienced to that point. The flowers sprouting from his meaty bald head then pushed it to another level. I didn't know the word yet but my young mind had its first notion of the "sublime".Other scenes touched that depth of humor as well. The "razor charming" scene, the race of the barber chairs to crazy heights, the lyrics for the songs, etc.Pure comedy gold.

When Bugs starts cutting a razor to Elmer's face, I couldn't help but think about the recent movie of Sweeney Todd, in which that character is a barber who literally cuts his customers' necks. Luckily, the rabbit just gives his nemesis slashes. Loved hearing Mel Blanc as the rascally rabbit sing the altered lyrics to the famous opera as he keeps Elmer unconscious in the barber chair. Too bad Arthur Q. Bryan couldn't contribute his own Fudd voice to the proceedings but Chuck Jones made up for that when he made What's Opera Doc? years later. Musically compelling as well as pretty hilarious, Rabbit of Seville is a gem among gems in the Jones-Michael Maltese cannon of Warner Bros. cartoons. Well worth seeing for classical music and classic animation fans.

This is one of the Best Bugs Bunny shorts that I've seen. The whole story of Bugs escaping Elmer through the opera "Barber of Seville" is pure genius. The whole short is filled with great music and funny scenes.and yes, Bugs DOES go in drag in it for a little bit and Elmer DOES wear a wedding dress near the end, but it is tastefully done with humor.I also crack up at the beard shaving scene and Bugs putting all of the stuff on Elmers scalp so that he grows hair. Then Elmer actually grows hair... which turns into flowers because of Bugs being funny. Then the chase goes back one. This is a short that I love along with "What's Opera, Doc" and "All This and Rabbit Stew" (which isn't shown anymore because of it's racial stereotype of black people.) and it deserves a 10/10 rating.

...to describe the insanity of this gem! My children & I sing the song, starting with "Hey yyoooooouuuuuuuuu!" I used to look forward to Cartoon Network's "June Bugs" promotion every year, since they would show all of the Bugs Bunny cartoon classics, and I got to see this one. Alas, they don't do it any more! BRING BACK LOONEY TUNES ON TV -- I WANT MY LOONEY TUNES ON TV!!!!!!Every step of the way, you cannot stop laughing at this cartoon. I also enjoy the "What's Opera, Doc?" short, but agree that this one definitely surpasses that one. It should certainly be on a video or DVD somewhere!
