It was fun. I haven't read the books so I had no expectations. It playslike a good TV pilot. Mild (by today's standard) violence, PG sex and language, attractive and effective casting, decent story. What's not to like unless you're an devote of the books and find the whole thing underwhelming. The thing is it was funny and the characters likable, especially the supporting and bit parts. Heigl gets better with age and I thought she pulled off the lovable loser thing pretty well given that she's a 10's 10. Shakespeare it ain't or even close to being in a class with 'Prime Suspect',The Fall' or 'Engrenages' ('Spiral'). Never mind, it's more like the 'Rockford Files' and, frankly, a bit of welcome relief from the relentless striving for the absurd, faux gritty, self-important pretensions of way too many crime sagas of recent memory. I would love to see more. I think TV suits this incarnation and sequels seem a stretch given the cost and the fact that all the top critics (a sorrier and more bitter lot could not be found) hated it for all their usual insecure, pusillanimous and anti- fun reasons. An 'R' version with a little more chaos, menace and sex wouldn't be unwelcome. Heigl (The Producer)needs to take the 'gloves' off (so to speak) to sell this thing. All I can say is grow up honey and get jiggy with it. It's worth it, I promise, and the world will be a better place.

This movie needed one of 2 solutions: 1) a better leading lady, or 2) a better director. My jaw dropped when a character died and Katherine Heigl sat on the floor chuckling as she said her line. Shouldn't that have been a blooper? Was the director so cheap that he couldn't re-tape that 1- minute scene? If finances were the culprit, I wouldn't be surprised. I see black women wearing better wigs to the supermarket than that noodle wig Katherine was wearing. To think she left Grey's Anatomy, which was filled with better actors who could mask her lack of excellence. This movie was like summer-fest, full of talentless hotties who can't even get a Nancy Drew movie right. Saying this movie should have gone straight to DVD is a compliment. This movie should have gone straight to Nickelodeon.

It is not often these days for Hollywood to produce such a dark and visceral crime drama as One for the Money. It is a work that has solidified itself in the canon of its genre. Set in the crime infested Alaskan city of Anchorage, Katherine Heigl portrays a hardened gumshoe looking for a shred of humanity as she journeys through a sordid world full of urban decadence and human filth. The plot is simple; there has been a string of rape/homicides of blonde females in Anchorage. Heigl has been put on the case due to her background in Special Forces. Once the wheels are in motion, what unfolds is perhaps one of the most authentic and poignant stories about the human condition, in the history of film.Like an anaconda slithering through a swamp, we witness Heigl navigate through her gritty world with ease as she sifts through semen covered crime scenes, sells crack to junkies in exchange for information, and engages in a lustful love-hate relationship with a diabetic stripper named Myrtle. After viewing this film for the fifth time, I can safely say that there hasn't been a more raw and honest depiction of a flawed, inner city, homicide detective, since the character of Detective Ventura in the 1994 Jim Carrey classic. As for her home life, when Heigl is not making pasta salad or cleaning the blood and semen off of her clothing, she soaks in the tub and reminisces about her high school days as a star running back. As the warm water absorbs her pain it becomes clear that an obvious question still haunts her; could she have gone further in her athletic career if she didn't have to drop out of high school to avenge her father's suicide? Perhaps. But the answer to that doesn't matter anymore. All that matters is the work. This is the life she has chosen. And there is a savage killer out there that needs to be brought to justice. The ending of this monumental film is nothing short of unapologetic and bold. It is revealed that Heigl had been the killer all along; raping the women, murdering them and then covering them in semen that she stole from her neighbor, John Leguizamo(plays himself). After she is arrested, she is immediately released and walks away scot-free due to her diplomatic immunity. Like all of the great stories of our time, in the end we are left wanting more as Heigl drives off into the sunset blasting Beyonce's "All the Single Ladies"; a song that once again calls attention to the film's underlying central theme that in this life, we are all alone. We are all single ladies. It would be a bloody, semen drenched crime if Hollywood did not to make a sequel to such a majestic piece of cinema. It should also be said that the masterful cinematography in this film represents the essence of what visual storytelling should aspire to be. I commend the director on his decision to shoot the entire film on a gopro.

Honestly, I think that the reviews were too harsh on Katherine Heigl (Stephanie)'s movie outside of her role on Grey's Anatomy. She's a seasoned television actress but the movie role becomes her. This is the second time, actually, that I watched this movie. Debbie Reynolds (as the Grandma Mazur) and Sherri Shepherd (as Lula) add great comedic highlights. Thinking that most folks can identify being unemployed and looking for a new job -- anything to pay the bills (although we really don't want anything), it was a blessing to find her friend at one of the places she was applying for a file clerk role and the friend was a true friend (altough she didn't recognize her) by giving her a better role at the company. Just goes to show that we all do have friends in "low" places (in places that we least expect them to be). The new role, a "cheesy" type of bounty hunter, sends her on quite an adventure with a spark of banter and romance. She takes her role seriously and tackles them with "grace". Well worth the repeat view. Should have reviewed it back then, but happy to do so now in hopes to encourage you to give this movie a chance!
