And deep within the heartland darkness, one of The Seven Gates of Hell demands the blood of the innocent to unleash the creatures of the damned.

Classic example of a film that had potential but which also had a producer who failed to see the importance of an actual story-line. (Which made any sense)The story follows a family being lured to a village on the pretense of the father (a pastor) taking a job at the village church. The villagers have an ulterior motive. One of the family members is selected to be possessed by the devil, in a pagan type "wickerman" village ritual. The devil (occupying the body of possessed family member) is then left about its business to kill all but one of the family members. The remaining one is used in a further ritual to banish the devil back to wherever it came from. The next family is lured to the village to continue the cycle. All this is fine and dandy. But there is no explanation of crucial background details / any details to make sense of the plot? Why the devil is given a sacrifice from a family to possess for just long enough to kill part of that family, before being unhappily banished again? What happens if the cycle doesn't take place? What is the criteria of the ritual which needs to be fulfilled? One dead, two dead? Once a year? Maybe Just don't bother and see what happens??Also things happen throughout the film which seem irrelevant or unexplained; At one point the father within the doomed family is rendered unconscious with chloroform over his face and locked in a church. Why did that happen? Did they intend to save him from the devil? At one point the other pastor of the village coughs up black blood when the possessed member (devil) is injured - I hoped this would lead to a twist in the plot which explained that he was manufacturing the whole need for this ritual due to an evil pseudo identity- but nothing more came of it.At one point there is red crosses painted on the doors and at others scenes of sheep having their blood drained into buckets- can we assume one is connected to ther other. Can we assume the red Sheep blood crosses keeps the devil out? (Why?) Assuming things is the theme of this movie.all in all it's always enjoyable watching scenes of possessed people killing their family members. Even if completely random with no explanation for why it is necessary is ever given. On a side note Can't help but notice striking resemblance between "the devil" and the grumpy girl from the well in "the ring":)

Another typical Hollywood horror B-movie. This one riffs on the likes of CHILDREN OF THE CORN and THE WICKER MAN in the tale of a small town hiding a dark secret. A new and boring family move into the community, where they're soon assailed by mysterious events and characters harbouring dark secrets. It's a long-winded and slow-paced story and one that doesn't offer up a whole lot of interest, it has to be said. NOTHING LEFT TO FEAR actually does better when focusing on the non-horror elements like characterisation and character interaction and falls down when it comes to the cheesy horror scenes, augmented with CGI ghostly faces as they are. It also relies too much on jump scares and clichéd, derivative moments for effect when really it should be offering something new.The cast aren't too bad, although they are given little enough to work with. Anne Heche is unrecognisable from her early Hollywood roles in the likes of SIX DAYS, SEVEN NIGHTS; she plays the suburban mother here. Rebekah Brandes isn't too bad either, although as with Alexandra Daddario in Texas CHAINSAW 3D, she's given little to do other than wander around in a skin-tight t-shirt. Clancy Brown is the best thing in it, but he doesn't have enough screen time.

Effect tip: putting a blurred out effect on a sharp background - yeah, that's gonna look fake.OK! So, I chose to watch this movie, even when knew it had a (current) score of 4.4 here on the site. That's low, especially for a rather big, no, comfortable budget horror movie like this.. but is it a fair score? Well, it's not too far off. Let me just say it: It's a shame. This could have easily been a lot better. There's some cool looking imagery. Some good makeup, and some cool effects. Unfortunately those cool effects come back to back with some not that good effects. The story is.. well, not terrible, but not exactly incredible either. Leaves some loose ends. The acting is satisfactory. But with all that (kind of) going for it, why is it bad?One problem is the pacing. The pacing is not good. There's no horror, until suddenly *bam* there's a way too long horror scene. The first time we see something scary, it's on screen for far too long. What an annoying mistake to make in a horror movie. The first time you see something scary in a horror movie, you should only see it for half a second. Or less. Another problem is lack of tension. There are few scary scenes, and the few scary scenes are not scary. It was one quick little shot that was slightly creepy, but that's pretty much it.So, to sum up. It's not scary, but has some cool imagery. The pacing is off, the horror is little, but the acting and production values are good enough for it not to suck too bad. It's not really boring, and that's why it's not that bad. Also, Rebekah Brandes looks damn good in a tank top. And she plays a teenager, but she's like 28 in real life. Good for her.Oh yeah, there's religion. Stupid, stupid religion. You are warned.

Pastor Dan, his wife Wendy, and their three children Rebecca, Mary, and Christopher, have just moved to the small town of Stull, Kansas, where Dan will serve as the new pastor, taking over from pastor Kingsman. Unfortunately, after only a couple of days in town, things start to take a turn for the worse after Mary is taken ill and then kidnapped by one of the town's residents. It's here we find out that there is much more than meets the eye with pastor Kingsman and the other residents in the idyllic town of Stull. For all the criticising that this film received, it's actually not all that bad. It's not that good, but it's not as bad as what a lot of people have been saying about it.It starts off decent enough, and the story develops OK as it carries on, but it doesn't pick up much more after a certain point and seems to just stammer along at times. The biggest complaint story-wise for me is that it never explains why the town is the way it is, so there's a really a big hole there. If there was an explanation for it then it might have been that wee bit better but your left to just try and pick out the bones and come up with your own conclusions.Another unfortunate aspect is that it's not really all that scary. There are a few moments in it which are quite creepy, but other than that it is pretty lacking.By the way, the special effects for the demon aren't as bad as what some people have said either and are actually pretty decent, especially considering the films budget.Anyway, if this is as good as Slash can get when producing films, it's best that he doesn't leave his day job.
