My Date with Drew Trailers

Ever since the second grade when he first saw her in E.T. The Extraterrestrial, Brian Herzlinger has had a crush on Drew Barrymore. Now, 20 years later he's decided to try to fulfill his lifelong dream by asking her for a date. There's one small problem: She's Drew Barrymore and he's, well, Brian Herzlinger, a broke 27-year-old aspiring filmmaker from New Jersey.

After reading the pitiful comment left by I_John_Barrymore_I, I felt it necessary to comment on this title. I had been wanting to see this movie for a long time only because I love Drew Barrymore and I think she's an incredible actress...and the main character of this movie could be any one of us who just wants to have a chance to meet one of our heroes. In this case, he gets to meet (and have a date with) Drew Barrymore after many days of trying relentlessly to communicate with her...all while documenting this film on a camera he doesn't even own and with a budget of $1,100 that he won as a contestant on a game show. I think it stirs emotion within a lot of people because again, this could be any one of us. I, for instance, would love for an opportunity to sit and have dinner and a conversation with Stevie Nicks...not because I want to have a "date" with her, but just for a chance to meet a personal hero of mine. So I encourage anyone who hasn't seen this movie to check it out. Of course it's not a blockbuster movie...it's a documentary...but a very well-done documentary with a very cool ending.

"My Date With Drew" accomplishes what any movie wants to. It evokes genuine emotions. I identified with Brian's quest. Who didn't have a crush on a beautiful Hollywood celebrity at some point in their life? The difference is that most people see it as a pipe dream and Brian saw it as a challenge, an opportunity to make a dream into a reality. And he's a very likable and charismatic guy. So I was really rooting for him. The feel of the film is very real. I get that these people are just going through their options as they think of them and then exploring them on video. It's funny. It's sweet. And it has plenty of moments where I found myself truly engaged into Brian's process. Feeling his pain. His elation. And when he finally gets the call from Nancy that Drew wants to have the date, and I saw the look in his eyes, I was right there with him. Full of gratitude. Happy to be alive. Life is about moments like this. Moments when something you work for and want more than anything actually happens. And when Brian actually has his date with Drew and you see how sweet, charming, appreciative and charismatic she is, the themes of the movie are personified perfectly within her. This is who she is. This is who Brian is. They were destined to meet. It was kismet. For his life. For his career. And even for hers. "My Date With Drew" shows us that the power and perseverance of the human spirit will triumph over all the odds. Watch this film with people you care about. When it's over, you'll care about them even more. For me, this film is ultimately about gratitude. Drew was grateful of Brain. Brain was grateful of Drew. And when you see the behind the scenes footage of the film, you really get that everyone involved was grateful for everyone who shared the dream and stood by it. Always go after your dreams! And if you really want to share it with others... be bold enough to get it on videotape. :)

I love this film. In my eyes it is perfect. I think that the production, narration, and people are amazing. I really loved how throughout the whole film he stressed how hard it is to get contact with someone as famous as Drew by the degrees of separation. His vulnerability and commitment to make something of himself in the business and make a dream come true in the process is genius. The greatest part about it, is that you as a regular joe schmoe can relate and really feel for him. When he was down you were very down with him. And when he finally got his date with Drew and felt that amazing high, I was right there with him and roaring with laughter and crying at the same time because I felt the relief and touching-ness that Drew gave him. And even better Drew herself really is this amazing kind and caring person who was flattered and I'm sure very excited herself. It was a real romantic comedy that no screenwriter could ever duplicate. Because at the end, he doesn't truly get the girl, but you still feel like he did.

Brian Herzlinger is a normal Joe trying to 'get a date with Drew Barrymore' in 30 days in this cloying 'Documentary'. Whether this is a stalker's attempt to desperately get a date with a actress he adores, or a clever ploy to jump start some sort of career for Herzlinger (I'm thinking more the latter), the fact remains that whichever it is, te film is manipulative at best and slightly alarming at worst. And if it WERE the former, rather then the latter, all the likability of Brian flies out the window as no matter how charismatic a stalker may be, the fact remains that they ARE in fact stalking someone. And if this movie inspires even one REAL stalker (and as I said before this film is a sham and a PR ploy), but if the film inspires a REAL stalker that would be quite a shame indeed. I can't recommend this film on entertainment ground, I can't recommend it on documentary grounds, and I certainly can't recommend it on ethical grounds. My Grade: D
