A few years before JUMP TOMORROW was filmed, the same leading man (Tunde Adebimpe) starred in a shorter version of this script entitled "Jorge". I have not seen the original film, so I cannot base my review on it but I was so taken by JUMP TOMORROW that I'm going to try to find a copy of this 30 minute short.Adebimpe very ably plays a Nigerian-American (George) who is a very odd man, indeed and I loved his low-key performance. In many ways he's a total geek and it's nice to finally see a Black nerd in a film who is NOT "Steve Urkel"! During most of the film, George is very quiet and shy--part of which is due to his introverted personality and part is due to his lack of enthusiasm for a pending arranged marriage. This film is about his trek from home to Niagra Falls to be wed.Along the way, he meets up with a very strange man (Gerard) who is suicidal and desperately in need of a friend. While George is in a hurry to get to his wedding, he is too decent a man to leave Gerard in his emotional condition. So, they travel together cross country to the wedding and they both become very unlikely friends. There's MUCH more to this movie that this--including a tough to believe but nice romance that occurs between George and a new lady--again, someone who seems so unlike George in almost every way. While this aspect of the film is a tad predictable, the performances and dialog are so fresh and unusual that the film held my interest throughout. As a result, I strongly recommend you see this romantic-comedy if you are looking for something different from the usual Hollywood offerings.

If you liked Garden State or About Schmidt then this is the movie for you. It's the search for yourself through the search for love. I laughed out loud several times and thoroughly enjoyed the strange and quirky ride. Why doesn't this director do more? I think the world wasn't ready for this film in 2001 but in 2005 it fits right into the mold. I caught this movie on a slow Sunday afternoon on the IFC Channel and my family kept running out into the living room wondering what was making me laugh so loud. Especially enjoyable was the lovable French sidekick that's too enthusiastic and too scared to be alone. My favorite scene is when he and the lead character chase the girl into the Lovers Lodge and then mix it up on the dance floor with the promo girls from the leather store. Their box dance is classic!

I stumbled across this film on Netflix, and am so happy I did. It's a small gem - made with exquisite care - with sharp performances, fantastic humor, and great visual style. The budget was clearly not high, but the director has succeeded in creating a much more stylish, engaging film that many bigger studio movies. The lead, Tunde Adebimpe, recalls Cary Grant in "Bringing Up Baby" with his buttoned up suit and heavy black glasses - and his journey to Niagara with his new best friend, Gerard, in a wonderful vintage citroen, is hilarious. The score is great. When will it be on CD?

!!!! POSSIBLE SPOILER !!!!!I do concede there is a market for romantic comedies , quirky road movies and independant features and I admit that I can take or leave any of these genres but I wasn`t too impressed with JUMP TOMORROW which iis an amalgam of all three genres . I did give it a chance and was slightly taken with the line dancing sequence but my interest waned towards the end so much that I found myself turning off the sound of the TV and playing music which is something I often do when I`m bored . So there I was listening to a compilation tape of The The while watching the TV with the sound turned off and just as JUMP TOMORROW reached its end the The The 1982 track Perfect started and I can`t hammer home enough how this song goes perfectly ( ! ) with the finale of JUMP TOMORROW . Try this at home , play Perfect by The The so that the track matches the last three minutes of JUMP TOMORROW where the Nigerian man and the latino girl are in the booth overlooking the massive waterfalls . It`s uncanny It`s been mentioned that if you listen to Pink Floyd`s Dark Side Of The Moon while watching THE WIZARD OF OZ the lyrics match what`s on screen . I don`t know if that`s true or not but Perfect and the final minutes of JUMP TOMORROW do go together
