He's Ace Ventura: Pet Detective. Jim Carrey is on the case to find the Miami Dolphins' missing mascot and quarterback Dan Marino. He goes eyeball to eyeball with a man-eating shark, stakes out the Miami Dolphins and woos and wows the ladies. Whether he's undercover, under fire or underwater, he always gets his man… or beast!

For all of Carrey's wacky antics and the, at times, overbearingly silly tone of the piece, there's actually a really dark, surprisingly layered mystery running through 'Ace Ventura: Pet Detective (1994)'. This isn't all that unusual for films starring the eccentric but sometimes unsettling star, though, as he tends to pick projects with somewhat of an underlayer to them. It is actually this rather accomplished piece of storytelling that cements the flick as one much better (despite some slightly problematic moments later on) than the 'stupid, vulgar comedy' some critics have 'relegated' it to being. That said, the comedy still is a funny one and the laughs are the primary focus, though here they aren't quite as intense or as cohesive with the concept as in some of Carrey's other work. We're asked to root for, and tolerate, an undeniably over-the-top and abrasive main character, and that can be difficult at times. It's certainly not impossible, however, and the flick is usually a good time throughout with plenty of laughs and a decent plot, to boot. 8/10

Great comedy film. Jim Carrey is one of my favourite actors around, and if he's yours too then you must see it if you haven't already done so. The film is very funny: will make you laugh throughout. The story is actually interesting even though it doesn't seem interesting. At the beginning of the film, it's full of jokes, but as the movie progresses, the story gets a bit serious with the humour somehow still there, and that's what makes the film a success since it's entirely a comedy film. Jim Carrey was perfect for the role as Ace Ventura "The Pet Detective", and I don't think anyone else could've played it any better. The villain was good (or evil) and complemented well with Jim's character: it was sort of like Batman was up against the Joker.

I loved this movie a lot as a kid, I still love it but not as much as I used to. It is one of those comedies that are worth watching over and over again. I thought I would get tired of the silly jokes and its silliness, but it still makes me laugh, it even still gives me tears of laughter. The movie itself is crap and would have fitted better as a cartoon material, but it is because of Jim Carrey the movie is so fun to watch. I just simply can't imagine another actor do what Jim Carrey did in this movie. I find it impossible to find another actor who can imitate him and still not overact. Jim Carrey was unbelievably enough a natural. There is a comedian in Greenland who imitate Jim Carrey, but he is just simply silly and not fun. Some Greenlanders even refer to him as "The Greenlandic Jim Carrey".But anyway, it is such a silly comedy that it can get unbearable to watch sometimes where it borders on just being silly instead of fun. But Jim Carrey made the movie fun. Courteney Cox was good too, but she was kind of overshadowed by Jim Carrey in this movie. But they both made the movie watchable, even though it had such a cartoon-ish approach. It is campy and childish and it seems like a 10 year-old directed the movie (not to insult the director, he actually did a good job considering the material). It is one of those movies that would have failed completely but it turned into a comedy which has loyal fans and, I am one of them.I give the movie 7/10.
