Jim Carrey stars as Tom Popper, a successful businessman who’s clueless when it comes to the really important things in life...until he inherits six “adorable” penguins, each with its own unique personality. When one sees the face of Jim Carrey on the cover of a film, one expects a certain type of movie-going experience and a certain type of comedy. If you are looking for that Carrey brand of comedy in this one, you will be severely disappointed. However, taken as simply a family-friendly flick, "Mr. Popper's Penguins" is a fun little effort that can be enjoyed by quite literally the entire family. For a basic plot summary, "Popper" focuses on the life of one Mr. Popper (Carrey), who is completely absorbed in his work and therefore has little time for his divorced wife (Carla Gugino) or two young children. When his recently deceased father sends Mr. Popper a gift of six penguins, however, they become equal parts blessing and curse as he tries to manage the pesky birds while at the same time bringing his family together around them. There are a lot of cute things in this movie for the kiddies, including the hi-jinks of the penguins themselves, a simplistic love story that even the really young ones will understand, and a secretary who is fixated on the letter "P", providing some interesting humor throughout. The children will easily get sucked into this one right away, and it does just enough to keep the adults from dozing off too.Though I was warned that this movie was "no good" by a huge Jim Carrey fan in my family, I watched it with my younger sister and enjoyed the experience. You just have to go into with the mindset that it isn't really a comedy, at least not by the traditional Carrey standards. It is family- focused from beginning to end, kind of reminding me of "Even Almighty" and its performance from Steve Carrell.Simply put, "Mr. Popper's Penguins" isn't anything to blow you away, but if you are looking for a good "family movie night" effort that won't offend anyone and might even get a few laughs along the way, then this one is a sure-fire bet.

I've been a fan of this guy since the early 1990s as a kid as he starred in A lot of over the top comedies that made me laugh out loud. From Dumb & Dumber to The Mask to Ace Ventura, basically he was the king of Comedy back in the old days. Since then his comedy isn't as funny as it used to be and here is an example of one film that wasn't as funny as his old school comedy movies. He plays a man who as a kid his father couldn't spend some time with him so he sends him a penguin that he receives in his front door of his apartment. But when he wants to get rid of the penguin he ends up getting 6 more of them the next day. Of course his son's birthday is approaching and his son is over the moon and even his ex wife(well it doesn't state but she must be his ex wife)even takes the penguins in too. But of course a zoo keeper wants to send them back to where they came from and its up to Carrey and his family to save the penguins.Overall I enjoyed this movie as it was on RTE ONE last night as the big big movie and I never seen it before so I decided to go and check it out. Carrey isn't as funny as he is in like I said his old school comedies because his getting older and his wacky side isn't as wacky as he used to be,but if your like me and your a fan of Carrey's since his career. Than check it out. Bottom line I prefer his old school movies more. 5/10

I'm so sick and tired of movies about dreadful people, drugs, violence, blood all over the screen... I was reticent about watching this movie, since my taste is already twisted by so may car crashes and decapitated bodies, but it was one of those things, a friend lent me this DVD and since I liked Jim Carrey so much in "I Love You Phillip Morris" I decided to watch this film, seeing Angela Lansbury was in it also. So: I LOVED IT!I read several of the previous reviews (fortunately AFTER I watched the picture) and noticed that many of those reviewers are excellent Special Effects producers, since they shred them to pieces. Well, I'm not a Special Effects specialist so, I found them ASTOUNDINGLY GOOD!!During my time in the business I spent so many hours designing sets and clothes and being there, watching the filming of a scene endless times until I thought I was loosing my mind, that I can appreciate ANY effort made by a crew trying to come up with something good, making it impossible for me to put down other people's efforts. I loved the penguins, the way they looked, the way they acted and interacted with all the actors involved in their scenes... I found ALL THE ACTORS excellent in their roles --otherwise they wouldn't be there, believe me-- , from the humblest ones to Jim Carrey.I have no complains about the plot, the happenings, the incredibility of most of the scenes... I just enjoyed this movie as much as I never imagined I could have enjoyed it. It leaves you with a nice, clean feeling about life and people. Listen, I know as much as you do that this life and its people STINK, but once in a while it helps to keep going watching a film of this kind.
