This show was sort of a cousin to The Twilight Zone, which premiered the same year,& The Outer Limits, which came along a few years after.Although not as well remembered as the other two,it was as well done & actually ran longer than The Outer Limits. The most basic difference was One Step Beyond was not purely fictitious as the other shows were, but based on actual cases of psychic & otherworldly experiences. The cast list was also very stellar, with such familiar character actors as William Schallert,Olan Soule,Warren Stevens,Mike Kellen,& Joanna Linville performing in episodes.Several future stars such as Elizabeth Montgomery,Warren Beatty,Christopher Lee,& Charles Bronson got exposure in different episodes also.Joan Fontaine co-starred in the episode with Warren Beatty.I first came upon it when a station in Detroit showed repeat episodes in the summer of 1973.I was a regular viewer after the first program.Among my favorites were the episode with Mike Kellen, playing twins separated at birth,& the episode about all the strange occurrences surrounding the Lincoln assassination.I actually knew a person whose father was a US Navy retiree who met someone involved in an incident dramatized in one episode that occurred on a Navy ship in World War 2.I was talking about the show, which aired on a Houston station at the time,I related what happened on the show(he had never seen or even heard of One Step Beyond until then),then told me his father had met this person who was there.I hope SyFy or some other nostalgia channel will pick it up & bring it to a new generation of viewers. It was one of the gems of the anthology genre,a genre I miss.

A great little TV series starting off the thriller TV genre leading to other greats such as the Twilight Zone and The Outer Limits. The main difference is this show stated each episode was based on 'facts'.It is clear there is a difference of opinion as to the merits of The Twilight Zone and One Step Beyond, but I don't agree that difference keeps one from being a true television fan or historian. There are going to be die hard fans of any show for many different reasons and I would see it as a stretch to take any difference as rising to the value of someone not being able to see past the nose on his or her face. As I see it, anyone might have a vast knowledge of television heritage, digested both shows and just feels a bit different than someone else might. Each show had a different premise; one stating it is based on fact and the other a made up story. If one did a little research on the 'facts' of each OSB episode, one might find it hard to find the scientific and government reports behind each episode. One might even feel a few gimmicks were thrown in to make the show more interesting.Going against the grain with one review on this one, I don't see being a television historian, former business owner in classic TV video sales and a Professor of Media Arts, rises ones take on the shows to necessarily being worth more than that of anyone else. This type of TV programing was new ground at the time and part of OSBs mission had to have been to just make sure it stayed on the air to be viewed again the following week. I might add that with any enjoyable discussion, there is never "Enough said!" However, after watching both TV programs you might agree that OSB is the truly better show to watch and rate as the clear supernatural TV champ.

I would be nice if the people who control the rights to the show, . remaster them and release all 97 episodes to DVD. . I found 95 of the episodes, but haven't found the "Th Bride" episode and another. . Outer Limits, . Twilight Zone, . One Step Beyond, . The Inner Sanctum were the shows to watch for sci-fi, horror on TV as a kid. . All of the programs, not only entertained but also made you think, dream and look at the world, thinking of the future.

When I think that The Twilight Zone and One Step Beyond were created and ran at the same time, it is hard to believe. Why? The production qualities of OSB seem "cheap", "noirish" and old-fashioned at first viewing. But that's the wrong way of looking at them. I think these are a plus to the mood and execution! What makes this series in some ways superior to TTZ is that these are not fantastical concoctions of the mind, but derived from actual accounts from reality! The casting in these is wonderful, too. Many wonderful portrayals in these. Although in some cases, the acting styles may seem dated to some viewers. It is exactly these qualities which somehow make OSB even more interesting and believable to the viewer. Well...at least this viewer.I am on a quest to find all of these episodes...I just bought the 10 DVD/40 episode compilation and cannot wait to fly through them!Recommended to those of you, select few, who enjoy good drama, mystery and discovery, wherever and however you find it.
