Got hooked in with the first few episodes, then watched it as a comedy cos it was so bad, especially the acting. Oh and don't expect the people with guns to win in a fight with a sword!!! What nonsense!!!

This show is exceptionally immersive and absorbing, often unbearably suspenseful (because you fear the worst might happen - and it usually does), at times genuinely upsetting, and in the end profoundly twisted. The first few episodes are like a soap-opera / who-dun-it with a murder here and there; but after episode 5, it changes mode into a survival thriller / who-is-doing-it. The writers take their time developing the characters, so you become emotionally invested in them, and each death is more heartbreaking than the previous one as the survivors get closer and closer to the finish line. The 13-episode format definitely works in its favor - no eternal dragging-out as it happened in another, more famous island show, for example. The mystery definitely takes a few pages out of Agatha Christie's "And Then There Were None", but then it rewrites them! There are clichés, of course, but you knew that going in. The performances are unusually strong for the slasher genre (some of the characters feel so real you want to jump into the screen and become their friend - Elaine Cassidy is superb). The cinematography and locations are terrific. The music is fitting. This is one of the most all-around satisfying TV shows I have ever seen. *** out of 4.

I knew who the killer was from episode one. So much for "really entertaining/thrilling/you do not see it coming". I am just reviewing this because I thought Harper's Island was a big disappointment and expected everybody to see it this way, but it turns out many see it as a benchmark in thriller shows and so I had to throw in my opinion. No, not everybody sees it as a successful thriller show, and all the viewers bitching about other shows like American Gothic (2016) should be tolerant/ be aware that there are people out there who disagree, see it the other way round. I do not think that American Gothic (2016) is the greatest show (esp. with a psychopathic kid running around mutilating poor cats - put the damn kid to sleep or into a cell before it does worse!) but neither is Harper's Island. It is okay that both shows exist, but in my opinion Harper's Island is NOT the better one. Just wanted to give a different opinion.

I really liked this program. I know it's scary to think there's someone out there who would kill people in such horrible ways, but you have to give the killer points for creativity. I mean seriously. My only real complaint is that we find out *way* too early in the series that John Wakefield is still alive. Personally, I wish Trish had turned out to be the killer. Can you just imagine? I will admit it seemed a pretty elaborate way of bringing the one you want to you ... I mean, he knew where she was, why didn't he just go get her? Harper's Island does have quite a few plot holes and questionable situations, but it's still a worth the watch. And I still think Trish should have done it.
