I'm only about 6 episodes in, so I will have to update this in the future. I'm new to anime, with only some exposure via Avatar, Korra, GITS. I actually watched the live-action 2017 movie first, and that piqued my interest enough to check out the original anime. This show already is much more detailed and in-depth than the movie (which I admittedly did like), yet still moves at a very quick pace. I'm definitely curious what there is left to explore in the remainder of a long season, but every episode so far has been very intriguing. There was definitely a lot of thought put into the play between Light and L and their constant intellectual chess (think the intricacies of the story in Primer). Very well done. Even though I'm new to anime, I know that the English dubbing is a big part of the review. The English dubbing on this show is amazing. Very great voice-acting. The actor voicing Ryuk actually sounds very much like Willem Defoe in the live-action movie-a pleasant coincidence!

I would've given this masterpiece Anime a 10 if only they erased episodes 26-37. What I did like about those episodes is the idea that Light died from his obsession with the notebook, but other than that the story with its characters are not near as perfect compared to episode 1-25. The new characters are just bad developed and the story and setting is rushed. 'Near' is supposed to be the 'L' in this same old plot, but fails in everyway as a character compared to the old L. Many of his conclusions are so far fetched(yet true) as if he already knew everything from the start, which is not the L I knew in the show's better episodes. Yes he was very smart, but also very patient and careful, which makes him far more intriguing yet reasonable and realistic. Old 'L' also never had a close friend in his life other than Light himself, which made the conflict complex and more personal. There is just nothing to root for this Near, because there is nothing personal anymore about this situation. He is not even a love-to-hate kind of character. Mello could've worked, but I just don't understand why they have to finish off 'L' in the first place, if they wanted to continue with this show. It could've worked though, because the idea that Light will die in the end seems the most reasonable climax in this story, HOWEVER due to the pointless added characters and also the misplaced actions of some older characters in where they stand for, not to mention a handful unrealistic setting choices, the show just falls flat compared to the previous episodes. If they still wanted to continue with this idea, than at least let the family of Light be the focus in this matter. It will not only develop Light's family, which we haven't seen much during episodes 1-25 but also Light himself. Yes we have seen them plenty in episodes 26-37, but not for the better of the story. Light's sister was kidnapped but it did not work, because I can't really say that there is much emotional investment during all this or after she was taken, since that was the only time we saw her really. Her mother was out of the picture during this and Light's father was forced to give up the Death Note personally. How you may ask? Well by letting a public airplane land in the middle of the nowhere to drop him near the anonymous hideout of Mello without any of the consequences.. and that is where I kinda lost it. kidnapping the daughter of the Chief(wich I might understand) and involve an entire passenger plane to the matter and I just don't buy it. After that Light's dad head out to capture this Mello, but then suddenly he started shooting on gangmembers without giving them the chance to surrender, wich goes against his character. During this event the whole building explodes, but somehow everyone survived it, ok. Then there is this Kira wannabe, without good motivation. He really comes out of nowhere just like almost every new character thowed in these final episodes including some shinigami we know nothing about. There is just no sense of direction to any of it anymore and that is why the ending just does not give satisfaction. Light's (remaining) family were not even in it when Light died. Where is the emotional investment? Because it ain't coming from Misa and Light's death just is not good enough. I know the show wants to recreate the classic Light versus L tophic, but lets be honest here. Near has got nothing on Light except for mayby avenging Mello, but that is just way to late for his character to work. Besides conflict does not always have to be an arch enemy, because in this case he already died in episode 25. It was the contrast of friendship and rivality why 'L' really worked! It was just a terrible idea from the show to recreate him as a new character in order to bring the conflict. As for the other characters, they are just not worth looking into. Why not use family as the main conflict, since family is not only more personal than the situation with Near and/or Mello, but it would also be simply more intruiging when it is paced right, than the involvement of rehashed characters like the series has done now. Sadly we can not change time at this point, I can only say that episodes 26-37 are way of the pace compared to the rest. What I really wanted to see is the reaction of Light's mother and sister knowing that Light is after all this time the true serial killer. It had the potential, but I digress. For me the show ends official after episode 25... I really love episode 1-16, I think the episodes up to 23 are good a bit hard to follow, since the key to watch those episodes are more or less: 'When will Light get his memory back and what will be his next step', ofcourse he had to help catching the third Kira first for 7 episodes, which is not as intruiging to watch, but the climax at episode 24 and 25 were totally worth the build up! I give it overall a 8,5 and I recommend it even for those who are not into anime, but just leave the episodes after 25 alone!
