During World War II in the freezing winter of 1944-45 the western Netherlands are in the grip of a famine. Many people move east to provide for their families. Fourteen year old Michiel can't wait to join the Dutch resistance, to the dismay of his father, who, as mayor, works to prevent escalations in the village.

wow, that's a 9+ one, story, acting, cinematography , directing, a+. Also, not a bad movie for subtitle reading as the dialogues are kept minimal. whatever genre you like, it is a good movie. Like a user described about 2nd world war in Deutschland, The Occupation was a lot smoother in some aspects then France regarding the nationals, and it bring a different flavor to war movies. It is a very emotional movies . Very recommended. ----- now I just red the negatives reviews, and I agree about the discrepancies in the plots and some situations. I guess I like emotional bs exaggeration and easily disregard illogical things. I will not name them, no need of negative spoilers. like Forest Gump, just let the movie take you for a nice ride.

Aristides-2 and malcolmgw have already mentioned some of the holes in the plot that you can drive a truck through, such as Jack's leg being broken and rotting away one day but being magically healed when he clambers across a river along the underside of a bridge on the very next day.Aside from absurd details like this, the historical premise of the movie is unrealistic. The events portrayed are supposed to have happened in January 1945, at a time when the Germans were running from the Russians in the East and mobilized their last reserves of manpower, weaponry, and fuel for the futile Battle of the Bulge in the West. And yet this movie will have us believe that, just then, a whole company or so of German soldiers - all young men in their prime, well- fed, well-armed and -motorized, spic and span - are tasked with playing cat and mouse all day long with a bunch of hapless villagers in the Dutch countryside? And that, with 5 years of battlefield experience, none of them can hit a standing target at 50 paces?I get that the makers of movies are more interested in human virtues and morals than in historical facts, but it nevertheless detracts from a move when the historical background is so poorly treated.

Because my parents were children during the war I watched the movie....carefully.This movie nearly transported me to my father's very childhood as he was the same age as Michael and had very similar experiences during that time, very.I'm thankful it was made and made with good attention (although not perfect) to the smallest of detail. I am thankful to have watched it. I will watch it again. It amazes me how one man, Hitler (who was obviously insane), can influence so many people to do such terrible things. And, many believe today that we as a people are much smarter than that. Sadly, I'm not convinced that we are.If you have any interest in this story, watch this movie!

Okay Before I Get Started Talking About This Film I Would Like To Start With Everybody's Comparison With This And The Black Book. Black Book Is Nothing Like This Movie, The Film Is Black And White (The Uncle Is A Natzi Hence He's Bad, The Pilot Is English Hence He's Good. Its Not Rocket Science), Not Shades Of Grey Like It Was In Winter In Wartime.Let Me Start With The Downpoints, The Movie Has Subtitles Even In The English Spoken Parts, Yes I Can Understand That Its For The Deaf But What About Us Who Aren't Deaf? That Just Annoyed Me. The Worst Written Part Is That When The Kid Witnesses His Friend's Older Brother And Father Getting Shot He Barely Sheds A Tear, When His Horse Had To Be Put Down He Starts Sobbing His Eyes Out. I Just Couldn't Buy Into That. At The End Of The Movie The Kid Is Alright As Long As He's Got That Pipe That Was At The Crash Site Of The Airplane, Again I Could Not Buy Into That, Maybe Its Some Message That Was Supposed To Be Sent Across Like "He Remembered What It Was Like To Be A Kid" That I Didn't Pick Up On But Even If Thats The Case I Still Feel It Was A Bad Ending.Onto The Good Points. Some Of The Acting Was Well Done, The Dialogue Was Well Spoken And Martijn Lakemeier Has Potential As An Actor However Yorick Van Wageningen Is The Highlight Performance. I Felt That At Points It Was Entertaining And The Twist That Ben Was A Natzi Was Well Done.Overall I Did Think This Film Was Good But Not Deserving Of An Oscar Nomination As Many People Believe It Deserves. However Thats What They Think And Who Am I To Judge Them On That. I Do Recommend This Film But Don't Expect "Black Book" Standards.
