Two investigators of paranormal hoaxes, the veteran Dr. Margaret Matheson and her young assistant, Tom Buckley, study the most varied metaphysical phenomena with the aim of proving their fraudulent origins. Simon Silver, a legendary blind psychic, reappears after an enigmatic absence of 30 years to become the greatest international challenge to both orthodox science and professional sceptics. Tom starts to develop an intense obsession with Silver, whose magnetism becomes stronger with each new manifestation of inexplicable events. As Tom gets closer to Silver, tension mounts, and his worldview is threatened to its core.

The film starts out as a barn burner with Dr. Margaret Matheson (Sigourney Weaver) and Dr. Tom Buckly going around the Chicago area debunking paranormal claims. It was interesting as well as building character. Dr. Tom Buckly invites a young student (Elizabeth Olsen) and romance interest into the investigating team.As the film progresses a man named Simon Silver (Robert De Niro) a blind psychic...a Kreskin on steroids, comes out of a 30 year retirement to put on a show. Buckly wants to expose Silver, but Matheson does not. She had confronted Silver before and didn't come out at the winning end. Matheson believes he is a fraud, but at the same time knows he is clever enough to deceive her. She wants no part of it.The story then centers around what turns out to be a weird confrontation between Buckly and Silver with an ending that I thought brought the movie down.Good acting with character build up. A movie that goes at a good pace and holds your interest.Parental Guide: F-bombs, no sex or nudity. If you like skeptic psychic investigators try "1408," "The Awakening," or "Apartment 143."

Very good until just past the half-way mark when it takes a downward spiral where very little makes sense. The twist ending is more of a let-down than a surprise and renders the film just plain silly.

Wow that was so bad. It's so bad partly because it does a horrible job explaining the many holes it digs for itself. And by the end of the film it makes even less sense. The twist that it tried to convey only completely makes it more confusing and it's just poorly written. I'm angry for war watching this.

Really enjoyed this movie. It's unusual, thrilling, all the actors do an excellent job and the twists are great. If you're looking for something 'new' and different to watch, that doesn't compromise on quality or star power, and that will genuinely surprise you, try this movie.
