I am always amazed at how inventive serial killers are in movies. In reality serial killers use fairly unimaginative methods in their crimes, and get away with them mostly through sheer luck. Even when they taunt the police with a note, they more often than not reveal a challenged level of literacy. But in movies, the planning and engineering skills of the average serial killer are on a par with putting a man on the moon. "Untraceable" is a case in point.Jennifer Marsh (Diane Lane), an FBI agent involved in detecting cybercrime discovers a serial killer using an Internet site to set up his victims. The film has an unpleasant premise in that the murders only happen if viewers log on, which they do despite pleas not to from the authorities. The film posits a very jaundiced view of society, becoming somewhat preachy on the subject. Much of what happens though is straight out of the Serial Killer Movie Manual, especially the head FBI guy taking a while to get on board with Jennifer's warnings.A single-mother back-story and a quirky offsider with victim written all over him help fill out the space between the credits. One break from the formula is that the murders all involve guys and aren't sexual in nature, a point of difference with 99 per cent of serial killer movies. Usually the most watchable part of this kind of thing is the detection element, and in this case the tracking sequences are the highlights of the movie. The ending is definitely drawn from the manual as the cops close in on the killer - you hardly need to watch the screen to know how it ends.As long as you don't expect a "Se7en", or a "Silence of the Lambs", "Untraceable" is not the worst serial killer thriller, however, it does take itself just a little too seriously - no wonder the critics thought its 'message' was hypocritical.
... View MoreThis movie is an underrated gem. The story is socially relevant and the situation is possible too. People say 'Saw' is great. Then, how did they find this one bad? Just go to youtube and see some of the videos were someone is getting killed. Believe me. There ARE such videos in YOUTUBE. Read the comments. There would be some comments in which people are taking the situation in a hilarious way. You see, this movie is highly relevant. The one flaw that I found in the movie is the ending. It is highly implausible that the kid would stage the death in the police officer's own garage. Besides, the way she escapes is highly unrealistic. I think the movie would've been an EPIC if they changed the ending and made her die in the end. Then, the comment they show in the last scene would've more effect. Seriously, I think this movie is just great
... View MoreA really typical crime thriller starring Diane Lane as FBI agent Jennifer Marsh, who is attempting to hunt down an untraceable serial killer who posts live videos of his victims on the Internet; the more views his videos get, the more danger his victims get into. With a movie named "Untraceable," it sounds appealing and makes you think some crook is committing nefarious activities through the computer or something, or spying on people through unknown entities, making his whereabouts virtually untraceable until the very end. However, this film ultimately just turns out to be another story about a cop trying to chase down a killer, with some action and a cat-and-mouse game to boot, but with no tension built-up and with cheesy acting. ***spoiler ahead*** And, posting live videos of victims on the Internet and having them get into deeper trouble from the more views it gets? It makes you lose hope for humanity, thinking that people would view live victims on the internet, knowing that it would be detrimental to the victims' health, just for the fun of it. Makes you wonder who these computer-savvied young punks are.The ending is abrupt, not really action-packed or adrenaline-pumping. It's just a really, really typical action thriller.Grade D-
... View MoreI just saw this movie on the television randomly without any expectations,, and I at first really just wanted to go to bed. But not after very long time I got hooked and I must say this movie was a really good thriller. It made me stand up a walking around nervously and I had to hug my cat several times. It was really realistic on the one hand, but on the other hand I in the whole movie had a hard time believing how much skills a college kid can have. He is not just perfectly professional at hacking(even into the FBI and finding out precisely who the hell in the whole FBI is working on his case) he is also very professional in different murdering/torturing techniques, car electricity and how to shadow FBI agent's and attracting them into his games. It was a bit supernatural. Especially because he just became Psyco after his dad had died, which wasn't long time ago. Another weird thing is, that Jennifer Marsh is super cool in everything from hacking to fighting, but she didn't take a Good look on the back of her car when she jumped right back in to that creepy car!! WTF. Why even go near the car, when the FBI is coming to get her??? And why not stop the bypassing cars for help(witnessing maybe) before she makes a call when she doesn't know if the murderer suddenly appears and shoot her right in the back while she is calling FBI by phone? BUT still this movie was very entertaining. And it is realistic in the sense that Griffen also dies, that there is no romance between Marsh and Box + there is no unnatural action scenes. And its not just entertaining, horrifying and mysterious – the movie also has a great message to the audience. I especially like the end "where can I download this".
