Unleashed is a hokey but fun action film with a script that is rather barking mad just as is its depiction of Glasgow with cockney gangsters, blind American musicians and a Chinese guy treated like a dog.Jet Li is Danny who really is raised like an attack dog, with a collar and sleeps in a cage. His master is a sadistic gangster played by Bob Hoskins who sets him loose on people who he wants dispatching.Chance leads him to the kindness of strangers as Danny encounters Sam (Morgan Freeman) a blind pianist and his ward Victoria. For the first time he encounters beauty, music and something like a family. However he has to choose when Hoskins turns up whether he wants to go back to his old ways and death fights or whether to go for a better life and he also gets a chance of avenging his mother's death. The film might sound daft but it has a starry cast with Hoskins hamming it up as the gangster, an unusual setting of Glasgow with not many Scots and Li showing of his mean martial arts skills.

In Glasgow, martial arts fighter Jet Li (as Danny) has been raised doggie-style by gangster Bob Hoskins (as Bart). When he has his collar on, Mr. Li is fairly docile - but when Mr. Hoskins takes the collar off, Li crunches bones and pounds heads. Looking a little like Ray Charles with a mustache, friendly Morgan Freeman (as Sam) arrives on the scene. A blind piano tuner, Mr. Freeman sees Li for the gentle soul that he really is, deep down. Ahh... Freeman has a step-daughter Kerry Condon (as Victoria Mills)...Freeman and Ms. Condon teach Li how to play the piano and be nice. At first, she has a scary metal smile, but Ms. Condon becomes kissable sweet after the "hardware" is removed and she shows Li how to lick vanilla ice cream. All goes well until Hoskins re-enters the picture. He wants Li to return to fighting for revenge and profit, and won't take "no" for an answer. An interesting debate can be made about how the film character rejects being paid to fight violently, when Li acting violent is what viewers pay to see.***** Danny the Dog/ Unleashed (2/2/05) Louis Leterrier ~ Jet Li, Morgan Freeman, Bob Hoskins, Kerry Condon

When i chose to watch this movie i had only the action in mind, i am never really impressed with Jet Li's acting, but i love his fighting, so when i chose this movie i did not expect much for a variety of reasons, for one i thought that having a human being used as a dog was a bizarre idea and the fact that this movie isn't so popular seemed to confirm that idea for me but once i watched this movie from start to finish i couldn't help but stare at the screen. The story in itself is so compelling and brings a sort of controversy in the area of child development and the debate of nature vs. nurture. The fact that Jet Li's character has been raised in such a hostile environment and somehow was able to reach a more sensitive and innocent side when he spent time with morgan freeman is such a touching element to such a movie. Morgan Freeman is brilliant as always and Jet Li's acting and emotion in this movie was spot on. The action was brutal and yet still had the finesse that Jet Li brings to all of his fighting scenes. This movie allows guys to reach an emotional side without feeling emasculated. Take out the action then it would be a great drama movie, take away the drama then it would make a great action movie, lucky for us movie lovers this was a combination of the two. I was entertained throughout the entire movie, i loved it, if you haven't watched it then you should.
