Oona (Emma Caulfield) lives in the near future. During the last decade, a company has come out with a "surefire" method for gals and guys to find their soulmates. It implants a "timer" around the wrist, like a permanent piercing, which counts down to the moment your true love enters your life. Oona and her sister Steph (Michelle Borth) have the devices, because the firm guarantees an 80% success rate. But, there are problems. Steph's timer says her soulmate is years away. This makes her go for one night stands with a variety of men, for she doesn't want to have any romantic attachments but also refuses to forgo intimate pleasures. At last she casts her eye on a handsome widower, Brian (Scott Holroyd). Oona is even more unhappy, for her timer has no countdown, indicating her true love has not GOTTEN a timer yet. So, when she meets eligible men, she asks them to get a timer, if they don't have one already, and hopes for the best. No luck so far, as the two devices are supposed to beep in unison if its the genuine article. This not only befuddles her overbearing mother (JoBeth Williams) but the attractive grocery cashier, Mikey (John Patrick Amedon) who wants to date Oona. What's a poor futuristic gal to do? This is quite an unusual romantic comedy, being a sci-fi entry, but oh, is it satisfying and lovely. As one can expect, the essence of true love is dissected and turned upside down. Is there only one soulmate for each of us, as Plato suggested? As of 2012, it doesn't seem so. But, there is an awful lot of divorces, too! Caulfield is beautiful and touching as the main character, with all of the others supporting her very nicely. Sets, costumes, photography and direction work for success. As for the script, its far-out romantic fun! My advice? Set the timer on the stove for no more than five minutes, then hop in your car to go find the best place to snag a DVD.
... View MoreOf course when I sign up for Netflix and start rating a few of my favourite movies, they invent for me a category called "Sci-fi Romantic Comedy". I don't even like romantic comedies so I think they just got that part from the gender on my profile. Do not be sceptical. While it seems like combining two formula genres together could only create disaster, that's only if it's not well done; TiMER proved to be well-written, well-acted, funny, thought-provoking and enjoyable. So there. The premise of a sci-fi is probably the most important piece to note in a movie review; it's also usually the most off-putting, cheesy-sounding and painful to both read and write, so let's get it over with. The premise of TiMER is that a technology has evolved that tells singles the moment that they will meet their soul mate. OK, that wasn't so bad. Let's get on to why this movie doesn't suck.First of all, good writing, including witty, sceptical characters who are simultaneously lovable. I was waiting for the clichés to pour in, but they didn't. Soon I got caught up in the dialogue enough to stop waiting for it. They also spent exactly the right amount of time devoted to the philosophical fallout of this technology without over-doing it. What would become of love if you had scientific proof that there was only one soul-mate for you? Would you ever try to connect with anyone who wasn't "the one"? Are the romantic detours in life not worth anything?I have to say, I watched this because I needed a laugh, so I was mostly looking forward to the funnies and the hilariously candid style of Emma Caufield, who can always make me smile, but right off the bat I was struck by how well the film got across that feeling of desperation and fear of being alone that so many people face. Me, I'm in a relationship and even I got upset by the end of the opening scene. But don't worry; TiMER is not a downer. You will be rofling quite a bit, especially if you're familiar with Emma's ridiculousness. Just sit back and let her do her thing!I came for the Emma Caulfield, but I left wondering where I could see more of Michelle Borth. Two very quirky and beautiful actresses that really vibed off each other. I loved it! Also look out for the child star from Butterfly Effect, John Patrick Amedori, all grown up and gorgeous. Excellent casting is another thing saving this sci-fi from possible cheesy fail.TiMER only has a 6.5 on IMDb, and I think it deserves much higher than that. So go watch it and vote. I think it needs to be up above a 7/10. As far as drama/comedies go, this one is just much better than average, and the mere 3000 voters so far have not done the film justice. Don't listen to them; listen to me!http://starlightmusing.blogspot.com/
... View MoreWhile the above review would say that this movie was somewhat inspiring, I would tend to disagree. Timer is a movie which promises to challenge the stereotype of one person for everyone, but in the end re-enforces it. There really isn't one person for everyone, and I was hoping that the movie would relate this to the audience, but the ending was flat and awful. The main character falls for a complete stranger after having a wonderful time with a perfectly wonderful younger man. (nope, not buying it). What this says and tries to re-enforce to us as an audience is that we should all date our own age, and anything other isn't the right person for us.Examples Her father has a timer but it isn't synced with the woman he's living with (much younger than him) Her mother and step-father both have timers and they are the same age.She is 30 and her love interest is 22, the timer doesn't think they should be together. She and her sister's love interest both have timers that sync and they are roughly the same age.Their younger brother is 14 and his timer goes off seeing another 14 year old girl.I was, for the most part, completely into this movie before the ending. It was well acted and had some great ideas. But, it turns out there is no enlightenment at all, just the same old society influenced bullshit, one person for you, the same age as you, and there's no one else for you.Bottom line, this movie is just a huge let down. Maybe it was my fault for wanting it to be deeper and have a more meaningful ending. But no, it's just the same old crap you've seen before.Don't waste your time with this one, it's a huge let down.
