Yes I see the Pulp Fiction stuff. Yes I see the Annihilator the bands cover so called Allison In Hell. It's a different kind of movie. Still just an average movie. 5 stars not above.

I've heard that the filmmaker has stated that it was meant to be a super macabre version of a Grimm style fairytale, which actually makes a fair bit of sense when you take a look at the plot structure. A young boy from the ghetto named Fool (Brandon Quintin Adams) embarks on a what is meant to be a simple B&E as a would be lookout, to the richest house in town, owned by the landlords of many of the project buildings that Fool's family lives in. The landlords themselves are two maniacal, homicidal lunatics who are both siblings and husband and wife. Yecchh. They are played by Everett McGill and Wendy Robie, who also played kooky couple Ed and Nadine in Twin Peaks, which was quite a shocker for me and took some getting used to lol. Fool and his older relative (Ving Rhames) find themselves trapped in their house of horrors with literally no escape, surrounded on sides by raving ghouls and inbred offspring of the demented couple. They keep these unholy spawn behind tell walls, in the attic and yes, under the stairs, which they all come piling out from in a squirmy sequence that shifts the darkly comic tone to the stuff just got real tone, quite scary indeed. McGill ramps up his usual laid back small town dude shtick for a outright unbalanced weirdo, at one point donning rickety homemade armour and a shotgun to 'hunt' the offspring through the house, tearing through cupboards and blasting walls open like bat out of hell. Robie is a grating banshee with a level of intensity that staggering in her abilities to keep up the whole time. It's a fun, gruesome ride and doesn't let down in the originality, shock or suspense departments.
... View MoreThe greatest achievement that Wes Craven made with this film was to make a story over a thousand years old fresh and original. This is Wes Craven at his best, taking a classic fairy tale format and bringing it into the modern age. Before thinking this is just a horror film, the idea of a witch fattening up children with candy to eat their raw flesh, is pretty horrific, yet Hansel and Grete is told to millions of children every year. Wes Craven plays with the dark horror behind every fairy tale, and instead of using an old brush, spray paints a new horrific fairy tale, with every classic element you could wish for with a modern spin. For me this is Wes Craven's best film, bold, outrages, truly original and unlikely ever to be made again. A wonderfully modern fairytale!!
... View MoreThe People Under The Stairs is an excellent and entertaining Horror-Comedy that combines great direction,a wonderful cast, scary thrills,Black Comedy,a creepy, memorable score and fantastic special make-up effects making The People Under The Stairs one Wes Craven's best and most Underrated films.Set in Los Angeles,California,The People Under The Stairs tells the story of a young teen from the ghetto named Fool(Brandon Adams)who finds out that him,his sister and sick Mother are being evicted from their apartment building by their landlords(Everett McGill and Wendy Robie)who want to tear the apartment building down. However, family friend Leroy(Ving Rhames)tells Fool that they can break into the landlords house and rob them because they are rumored to have lots of cash and gold. But when Fool break into the house he discovers that the landlords have a dark and disturbing secret and in the landlords house there is no way out and no escape. In Between the excellent A Nightmare On Elm Street(1984)and the Brilliant Scream(1996),Wes Craven did a few great Horror films that are often Underrated and overlooked,Horror films such as The Serpent And The Rainbow,Shocker,New Nightmare and the fantastic and very entertaining Horror Comedy The People Under The Stairs which is one of the best Horror films of the 1990s and over the years since it's 1991 release developed a Cult following. The People Under The Stairs is a great Horror film that right from the opening pulls into a demented nightmare that is twisted and is a Horror movie that scares you with moments and scenes that are unpredictable and very surprising and you as the viewer never know what's going to happen next and you're on the edge of your seat. Wes Craven tells the story as if it was a scary legend or dark fairy tale of something happening in a house, neighborhood or a street and the scary legend or fairy tale-like storytelling will have you terrified. In TPUTS there is a dark and creepy atmosphere throughout and a since of dread which adds to the film and makes the jump scares and scary scenes more effective and with each jump scare there is suspense that is intense and thrilling and can make your heart race. Craven also injects the film with terrific social commentary talking about issues such as urban decay, racism, social class and child abuse and Craven handles the issues in an honest and harsh way never holding back or uncompromising. What I also love about TPUTS is the dark Comedy and Humor that the film has where there is moments where you are laughing because the characters and some things like booby traps, the dialog or the use of S&M clothing(you'll see)in the movie that is so over the top you will feel uncomfortable laughing and at the same time you won't. Craven greatly balances out straight forward Horror with Black Comedy in such a flawless way. The violence and in TPUTS can be brutal and vicious at times but in fits with tone of the film and while the film isn't too gory the movie's not afraid to get a little bloody. The main character Fool is a wonderful character because instead of being an adult or an older teenager,Fool is a young teenager who just turned 13 and wants to provide for his family and you will relate to Fool. Also, with Fool being a kid it adds to the suspense of the film because when you watch the film you wonder will Fool survive the danger that's all around him or will he be defeated. If the character Fool represents good then the landlords Man and Woman(whose names are never revealed and who call themselves Daddy and Mommy)represents evil in the sickest and most depraved way whether it's living off the Money of poor with vicious greed or abusing kids or with their house being a death trap where you can't get in or get out. I think it's those things that make Man and Woman so scary and frightening because they both look like they could be a couple from a 1950s t.v show but it's all a facade. The Man and Woman are among the best villains and characters Wes Craven has ever created. The ending of The People Under The Stairs is amazing and filled with great thrills and surprises. It's a conclusion that will have you cheering at the screen. The cast does great jobs in their roles. Brandon Adams is excellent as Fool, with Adams bringing depth and toughness to the role. Everett McGill and Wendy Robie are brilliant as Man/Daddy and Woman/Mommy,with McGill and Robie being scary and funny at the same time. A.J Langer is fantastic as Alice, with Langer bringing sweetness and innocence to the role. Ving Rhames does a great job as Leroy,a robber that helps Fool. Sean Whalen is wonderful as Roach,a young boy that's roaming the house. Bill Cobbs is terrific Grandpa Booker,Fool's Grandfather. Kelly Jo Minter is outstanding as Ruby,Fool's sister. Yan Birch does a fabulous job as Stairmaster, one of The People Under The Stairs. Jeremy Roberts(Spencer)and Connie Marie Brazelton(Mary)give good performances as well. The direction by Wes Craven is brilliant, with Craven always moving the camera and using great angles and keeping the film moving at a tight pace. Amazing direction,Craven. The score by Don Peake is fantastic, creepy, effective and truly matches the dark tone of the film. Wonderful score,Peake. There is also a great Hip-Hip/R&B song by Readhead Kingpin And The F.B.I.(Do The Right Thing)that is a good listen. The Special Make-Up Effects by K.N.B. FX Group are great, bloody, gory and realistic and definitely add to the film. Fantastic job,K.N.B.In final word,if you love Wes Craven or Horror Films,I highly suggest you see The People Under The Stairs,an excellent, underrated, scary and funny Horror Comedy that is Wes Craven at his best. Highly Recommended. 10/10.
