The film that made Eddie Murphy into a bona fide superstar, Beverly Hills Cop is a great example of 80s mixing comedy and drama. The script is great, pacing is natural and the performances, especially Murphy as Alex Folly is really good. Though watching it today people may wonder what the big deal is, this film was massive in 1984. To Think that Sly Stallone was originally slated to play the main character just boggles the mind. If you haven't seen Beverly Hills cop, and only heard the very famous theme, its time to give it a watch.
... View MoreIf you've never seen this film at all or you happen to be a fan of both the eighties and Eddie Murphy's sense of humour then I can guarantee a great evening. The comedy is brash but it goes with the territory, generally it's a well made film with a great plot.Eddie stars as a maverick cop called Axel Foley whose antics test the department in particular, commanding officer Inspector Todd after a sting operation goes badly wrong. Axel meets childhood friend Mikey Tandino and they go for a drink for old time's sake. Things go wrong when returning to Axel's apartment when Mikey is murdered whilst he(Axel) is knocked unconscious. Inspector Todd sympathetically gives Axel time off and it's not long when Axel heads to Beverley Hills to track Mikey's killers and then that's when the fun starts...
... View MoreDefinitely of its time, Beverly Hills Cop is full of wisecracks and 80's/90's pop tunes mixed rather high. In terms of comedy or seriousness, it's neither fish nor fowl. One minute Axel Foley is having his hotel deliver a late lunch to cops that tried to covertly follow him and are staking out the hotel, whereas some time beforehand, and some time later, people are being filled with holes. It's definitely a popcorn cop movie overall, but with serious moments.Eddie Murphy makes a thoroughly likable lead, and his disrespect for procedure contrasts nicely with the buttoned-up procedural processes of the local police department, and I think the film also makes a nice contrast between the opening in Detroit that makes the city look distinctly 3rd world, and the plastic peachiness of California, where even the crooks have mansions (sorry, I meant "as usual"). Although Murphy takes an obvious lead (I can't imagine how the originally-cast Sylvester Stallone would have handled it), the film is carried by the ensemble cast without whom this would have gone nowhere. The script changes made between the Stallone original and the Murphy final have incongruities in how a mean streets Detroit cop has the connections he has (and the name he has, and the brother he no longer has (see the extras for an explanation of that!)) but the whole thing was pretty likable, so this can be overlooked.Overall rating: 9 out of 10.
... View MoreI wasn't in mood to see such a action-com flick but in the end I sat down to see it. Well, this was actually not an usual action comedy movie. This seemed to be a trend setter for many others which made after 1990s. Yeah, this one really was cheesy yet stylish with powerful performances. Story was quite simple about a cop's raids in an unknown state. The film as concentrates on many little plots at the same time, it doesn't drag at all to make you groove. Technical departments ain't well noticed enough in this flick which make a bit dragging watch. The production design is not too delightful against some beautiful performances. Actors are well shaped and their dialogues are swiftly delivered yet there is no such thing which seem glossy to feel. Eddie Murphy is amazing, he nails his performance to make you clap on his work. From others, Judge Reinhold is quite impressive. Lisa Eilbacher is almost wasted. Still, these things doesn't make movie unwatchable. Go for it, will make you think over today's action flicks.
