Yeah, you have to suspend your disbelief while watching this movie. Most viewers knew something was off with him from the beginning. Some plot holes. Overall, a pretty good thriller. Not Johnny's best work but I'm a fan. Charlize Theron was the central figure and did a good job. Lots of references to Rosemary's baby but more of a scifi bent. Great supporting cast including Joe Morton and Blair Brown. It kept my attention, good special effects. Looks like people either liked it or hated it.

I know this movies' been out a long time, but I saw it last night for the first time. I came into it wary after seeing the reviews it'd gotten here on IMDb, and I almost didn't watch it- but I'm glad I did.The film starts off typical; astronaut is leaving for an orbital mission in space and his wife is of course worried and distressed. But during and after he comes back from his mission, that's when things get interesting. As it progresses the movie starts to become a psychological thriller and continues to slowly build up until I was holding my breath, eyes wide on the edge of my seat, calculating how this movie would or could end. It becomes clear that there are two different paths to choose: The astronaut is really a dangerous alien who's impregnated the astronaut's wife with alien spawn, or his wife is crazy and paranoid. Either way, it made for a scary scenario. The main cast is brilliant; Johnny Depp and Charlize Theron blend so well together. (and WOW are they young in this movie!) Both actors' acting is great but I think Charlize came out shining in this one. She MADE me believe she was in agony, inwardly and outwardly, over the situation. I felt her pain, which is hard to do. The script is decent, the camera-work well-shot, and the atmosphere: tense. I really thought it was astronomical. (pun intended)The only negative thing I have to say is that the ending sort of leaves you to your own imagination. Maybe you like that, but for me, I like closure.Parents, please don't let your child watch this movie. I don't think anyone under 12 or 13 should watch it. There is a major, violent sex scene, sex themes throughout, violence, death, (shown) suicide, murder, and attempted self-abortion via pills. I personally skipped the major sex scene, cringed at the suicide, and was disturbed at the attempted abortion. So once again, when it comes to children, approach with care. Maybe watch it before them and determine for yourself whether they should or shouldn't watch it. I hope you have appreciated my review. Please leave a like if it was helpful and go look at my other reviews! Thanks!

The plot of the movie is not good, however the cinematography is alright. Charlize Theron plays a sympathetic character and I thought she was the force that kept the energy in the film going. Johnny Depp has done better films (What's Eating Gilbert Grape) and I felt that he was wasted in this flick. The ending of the film was a major let down the first time I saw this film. I also thought the supposed twist at the end was an extra let down. I think the movie would have been better if the first half had stayed the same but lose the second half. The special effects were decent. I felt like this movie was an attempt at being "Rosemary's Baby." However Rosemary's Baby is a hard to mimic film. No actress can imitate Mia Farrow. Roman Polanski (despite his personality flaws and scandals) was a terrific director. In my opinion, I felt the director was trying to summon the same edginess from Rosemary's Baby for this film.

I sat on this movie for about two weeks without commenting on it. I liked so much of this film but I hated it in an equal amount. This is a movie that I can neither recommend but can't dissuade you from either. The story is pretty good. An astronaut named Spencer (Johnny Depp) and his partner trapped in space after an explosion and for a short time contact is lost. Depp's wife (the captivating Chareze Theron) waits for what seems like an eternity for information. Turns out he is alive but in a coma. He wakes up, gets out of the hospital and he and Jillian go home. But something isn't right about him. He just seems odd. Jillian sees him carrying on conversations with strangers and then brushing off her inquiries. In a movie like this it is almost impossible to get around the tired old plot device of having someone who works for an agency trying to get information out while his life is in danger. In this case he is played by Joe Morton as one of those sweaty, breathless guys who says things like 'I don't have much time'. I liked it better when Spencer's behavior was mystery that was slowly developing. I like to figure things out like this for myself, I don't like them explained.Jillian digs deeper and finds that the secret is buried in her own body. I liked Theron's performance as a woman who gradually begins to realize the gravity of her own situation. She is one of the rare actresses who can panic very well. I liked this character and hoped the movie wouldn't cop out on me. I did not however like Johnny Depp's performance. He comes off as one of those cold villains that speaks in a soft menacing voice and we are never given the opportunity to wonder if he is himself or if it's all in Jillian's head. The movie loses it's nerve in the last half hour. I found the ending to be confusing and trapped itself in tired old clichés with a special effects light and laser show that I have seen over and over and over. What I appreciated about 'The Astronaut's Wife' was the way that the is allowed tension build, at least for a while. There are just as many thing wrong with the movie as there are right. I wish that I could lean one way or another but this movie has me at a loss. I'm in the middle here and so is my rating: Rating: **1/2 (of four)
