Yes, it is impossible to talk about Repeaters without mentioning Groundhog Day - a charming family film where a sardonic Bill Murray has to relive the same dull day again and again until he can find a way of somehow - literally - moving his life forwards.Groundhog Day was a happy-go-lucky sort of affair, filled with light-hearted 'what if' scenarios. Here, in 'Repeaters,' we're presented with a similar premise, i.e. what happens if you're stuck in a day. However, the results are far from Groundhog-like.This time there are three central characters who keep reliving the same day and they're all in a recovery centre, trying to get over various addictions. Then, once they discover their new 'power,' they hardly use it to help the homeless. Therefore we're treated to what people with very dubious morals would do if their day had absolutely no consequences whatsoever. It's a great film. The performances are perfect from all characters, the setting it suitably gritty and it's not too long. However, it's not one for the faint-hearted. It covers pretty much all the nastiest adult themes you can think of, so, if you're looking for a 'feel-good' kind of movie, you better steer clear.Bottom line: Groundhog Day + comedy = Groundhog Day. Groundhog Day + action = Source Code, whereas Groundhog Day and nastiness = Repeaters. Not one for everyone, but if you're looking for some gritty sci-fi/thriller, definitely give this one a go.
... View MoreAt the time of this writing, IMDb rating for Repeaters was only 5.8.Last week, a good friend of mine recommended this movie to me, and even though we do not always agree on what is a good movie, I watched it, and I am very glad that I did. This movie explores one of the most intriguing premises: what if today was to repeat itself indefinitely, and you had the freedom to do what you want and remember everything you did and what happened, every time the day repeated itself? What would you do? This is the privilege, or the curse, that befell on three drug addicts in a rehabilitation center. It is a privilege if you can learn what you did wrong and use that knowledge to improve the events of this day. But it can be a curse if you see it as a damn trap out of which there is no escape. The story unravels at a nice steady pace, and things are quickly evolving toward some pretty dramatic situations. The performance of the actors was decent enough, and the director should get recognized for putting together a very logical sequence of events despite the complexity of the story. I am pointing this out because I noticed how often some movies add confusion just for the sake of being creative. Although I generally appreciate the effort, sometimes it's just better to keep things simple so as to get the story across effectively and memorably. And this is particularly important when the story includes many very interesting ideas such as the duration of the time loop, what if it's infinite, what happens if it ends, how will you know, death and time, does what you do have any effect on the "real" time line, and, come to think of it, which one is the "real" time line. Then, when you have all the details of such a story straight and clear in your mind, it's so much easier to mull over them later, as I did, and still do.
... View MoreOkay if you've read the premise you may think "Wow! That's Groundhog Day!" Well as someone who watched the movie - While I can see a lot of backing for that, it's less of a rip-off and more of a reworking of the premise to instead of being some quirky comedy with heart to instead be darker and some kind of symbolization of the life of a junkie.Okay so the premise, Three junkies in rehab are shocked electrically one night and repeat the same day over and over. At first they abuse this like mad, getting drunk, robbing places, breaking and entering the rehab (counselor/priest)'s home and trashing it. After making someone selling one of their sister's drugs they think "This might be taking it too far" and only 2 of them come round to this. The third one continues to rape, murder, stealing cars and whatnot with the mentality that he'll just wake up in his bed the next morning with no repercussions.Okay the acting is fantastic. They really pull through good performances in the movie and I will certainly be looking for more stuff that these people have been in. I mean even Richard De Klerk gets the role of a very generic character but even then he seems to pull off something and to his credit even though he's the generic 1 Dimensional bad guy he does look like he's having fun with it even though - yes he plays a monster. The Cinematography is excellent. I don't know if this is high or low budget for Canadian cinema but if it is then I will give the cinematography even more points. Every shot is beautifully set up and executed. If there was any major complaint with this movie (because most of them are nitpicks) is the last 20 minutes or so. So the cycle ends once Sonia and Kyle do what they want to do and either Kyle tells his sister he's sorry for beating her up or Sonia telling her father that she doesn't want to live with the scars of his sexual abuse anymore - Okay! These scenes are done fantastically. I just felt a kind of "That's it?" vibe from it because I know it symbolizes the life of a junkie and how it's a new day and they are improving their lives but I wouldn't have minded seeing them still do some good for other people like trying to stop that girl from jumping off the dam again. I just felt that it was something they could have done on almost every other day and didn't do it.So if you're open to a story that has been told but this time taking a COMPLETELY different angle from it (but unfortunately this will be compared to it) then this is for you. I can see why some people wouldn't get invested in it as much as I did. With that said the cinematography, the directing and most of the other elements are pretty well done. I would recommend this movie to anyone who can accept this as it's own unique thing without drawing any references to Groundhog Day.
... View MoreUh, no explanation at all as to how it is they travel through time- (and don't tell me ooooh lightning struck them...cause thats no explanation) and no explanation as to how they STOP travelling through time..although SPOILER...apparently they don't stop casue the end scene is Mike waking up again...so uh...this movie was NOTHING more than a "don't do drugs" film. cause thats all they kept harking on. People who do drugs, obviously (so sayeth the movie) make bad decisions and are bad people.I bet they show this film in rehab a lot just like they make people watch "doing time on maple drive" cause I've been staff in rehab and trust me, they make you watch some pretty lousy don't do drugs movies...This film is not a mind bending thriller...its a movie about people who made crap decisions with their lives , ended up at a rehab center, somehow without explanation got the power to reliver the same day over and over again, and still made BAD DECISIONS throughout the film , so, moral of the story...bad people, do bad things, because they are bad. When they are druggies on top of it, they then have an excuse for their being bad...god this movie was so boring.
