"Buck Yuen" (Jackie Chan) is an employee of a small exercise equipment shop in Hong Kong. One day he happens to see some suspicious people nearby and follows them. When they attempt to rob a jewelry store he springs into action and this gets his picture in the news. Then, as luck would have it, this attracts a private investigator to discern if he is possibly the heir to a client of his who just happens to be involved in drugs and espionage. Now rather than reveal any more of this rather complicated plot I will just say that, as usual with movies involving Jackie Chan, this film had more than its fair share of martial arts action. It also had some pretty good comedy too. Unfortunately, as I stated earlier, the plot was somewhat complex and the movie itself seemed heavily edited which certainly didn't help the overall cohesiveness of the film. Additionally, the sound quality wasn't very good either. In short, although this was an enjoyable movie for the most part it definitely had some flaws and for that reason I rate it as only average.
... View MoreI always enjoy watching Jackie Chan on the screen. He is a very spectacular martial artist who also utilises slapstick in all of of his movies which is a throwback to the Charlie Chaplin-era. Look no further than movies such as Rumble in the Bronx (1995), Rush Hour (1998), and Shanghai Noon (2000) as his career highlights. Like all actors/actresses they all have a lot of movies that can be divided in the hit and miss category and The Accidental Spy is certainly a movie to forget for Jackie Chan. The comedy seems to be forced and I just couldn't get engaged in this movie. The entire story was just pathetic. In fact this movie was woefully bad, that it put me to sleep after 30 minutes.Unless you are a die hard Jackie Chan fan, look elsewhere.1/10.
... View MoreThis review is for the Hong Kong version, and NOT the cut American one. I saw this a few years ago, and remembered enjoying it, but it was the Dimension version. I love Jackie Chan, so I felt like revisiting it. This is basically a quickie project for Jackie Chan. Too often does this movie alternate between heavy drama, and comedy, failing to find the proper medium like other successful Jackie Chan films. It starts off rather decently. We get one of Jackie's patented breathtaking stunts involving Jackie being on a huge crane as it collides with a tall building, which was pretty impressive. Then it bogs down into major tedium with a convoluted plot that failed to engage my interest. Another problem with Accidental Spy is, other than Jackie Chan, the characters are downright uninteresting. Even Jackie Chan isn't as interesting as he usually is. He does have a couple of great stunts, as I mentioned somewhat up above in the review, but this is not up to his usual standards. He seems unsure how to take on this diverse role, not that I blame him. It's a bit of a messy film. The finale pours on the action, and it revitalized my interest a little bit. Jackie takes on a truck to chase after the baddies, and it was actually pretty exciting, with a memorable stunt at the very end. But it was too little, too late for meNote: Keep the movie on after the end to see Jackie's stunt outtakes. They are always amusing to watchBottom line: This was rather mundane for me. I must have been really naive to enjoy this movie originally, considering it was the U.S Dimension version! This film is too convoluted and dull for its own good, with action here and there. Worth a watch once for big Jackie Chan fans, but that's about it. It's nothing special 5/10
... View MoreJackie Chan goes from a salesman to becoming involved in an opium drug scheme in this nicely paced thriller. The problem is that the plot needed to be developed more. You get confused regarding who is really behind this.Naturally, in a picture of this nature, there are scenes fully action-packed. Chan's knowledge of fighting sure comes into use here as he is fighting the bad guys almost constantly.Any attempt at romance is thwarted when it is revealed that the alleged reporter on assignment, is really an addicted person, and she meets a bad end.The truck scene, where the truck is on fire, is most exciting. It's the last scene that confuses us all. The short guy who Chan meets up with at the bar, earlier in the film, is much more involved than we would ordinarily think.
