Quite different tonally from the first two films of this series. It feels like the script was for an original zombie story, and a few aspects were changed to connect it to Return of the Living Dead (trioxin, brain hunger). This is perhaps a relief, seeing as Part II (reviewed above) is little more than a repeat of the first film. It was fun enough, but I wouldn't want a third film that was exactly the same. This one's actually a bit of a tragic romance and completely lacks the comic sensibilities of the first two. J. Trevor Edmond is about to be shipped off to military school by his Colonel father. He and his girlfriend (Melinda Clarke) ride off angrily on his motorcycle after an argument with his father, and Clarke is killed when they crash. Having witnessed an experiment with trioxin in his father's lab, he takes Clarke's body there and brings her back. She's fairly normal when she wakes up, but soon the hunger overtakes her. The film seems cheaply made, but the practical effects are somewhat fun and the zombie action is decent. What makes it worth watching is Clarke's performance. She's excellent.
... View MoreI recall wanting to rent something cheesy and campy for a weekend alone and came across Return of the Living Dead III. I knew it had to be better than part 2 (which I consider the worst zombie movie). I expected a lot of skin, a lot of gore, a lot of comedy, and not much in regards to plot. What I got was some skin, a lot of gore, no comedy, and a fairly decent plot. True, some of the plot shenanigans were fairly predictable, and I think the writers were not too sure how to end the movie, but there is an interesting twist of being a zombie. Curtis and Julie are in love. Curtis' dad is in the military and working on a top secret project to use the pesky chemical that brings back the dead. Curtis and Julie see an experiment gone awry and run away. Curtis' dad then is re-assigned to Oklahoma City and must leave immediately. Of course, his son does not want to leave Julie behind. He runs off with Julie, but an accident happens and Julie is killed. Curtis remembers the experiment and brings her back - but she's not the same girl as before. She doesn't want to hurt Curtis, but struggles with her own transformation into a zombie. I was pleasantly surprised how some character and plot developed. There was conflict and dilemma for Curtis, his dad, and Julie. On the other hand, the movie's ending came off a uneven and unfocused. And it falls into the trap of a few horror clichés - like kids sneaking into a military complex. For a change, the Return of the Living Dead franchise got a little resuscitation and came back to life.
... View MoreBeing not the biggest fan of the Return of the Living Dead-series, I of course did not have high hopes for this one. But as it turned out, this movie was not all that bad. Its change of settings and approach to the concept work refreshing and more entertaining than was the case in the first two movies but at the same time it still doesn't succeed in becoming a good movie as well.I honestly quite liked the movie for its first part. It was silly but it was entertaining nonetheless. Contrary to the first sequel, this movie wasn't just a simple rehash of the first "The Return of the Living Dead" movie, that has now become a sort of a cult-classic. This movie is actually having some new ideas in it, which is the foremost reason why I still rank it a bit higher than the first sequel "Return of the Living Dead Part II".But no, as it turns out in the end, this movie is also only just half good itself. And quite literally really. I often have this problem with Brian Yuzna movies. It's as if he's saying half way through; well, I gave you a good first half. I gave you a story, I gave you characters. Now it's time to let things go crazy and let me do my own thing! It's as if the movie is giving up half way through, or as if they ran out of its script and ideas to work with. The last 30 minutes or so of the movie are just too silly and seem out of place with the rest of the movie. I honestly would had preferred it if the movie had just ended after 1 hour and the last 30 minutes never existed.I have yet to see a Brian Yuzna that I like completely. He's a director that often comes in to a horror-series after it's already an established name and brand. He did this most notably with the Re-Animator-series.On a more positive note about this movie; I quite liked its effects. It was over-the-top but quite nice and gruesome looking. There maybe is not as enough gore and blood as you would expect but when the movie does go gory, it does it rather well. Not really a movie worth recommending but then again, this is how I feel about every Return of the Living Dead movie made.5/10http://bobafett1138.blogspot.com/
... View Morewhen i was around ten, i stopped going outside at night for a few years after seeing this movie. my parents didn't like it (the movie). the gore is classic, and river man with the spine thing is classic. short review, short movie. would watch it again. the returns from the eighties were funny and campy as can be, but with the dawn of the nineties, the gore got better, and the whole teenage angst thing took total hold of the series. this film is the total product of the nirvana, my so called life generation that spawned so many great bad films....i like bad films mind you so...all in all, super fun, super sexy, and contains broken glass breast implants. if you skipped this one its probably available somewhere.
