Straight off the bat, people are gonna rip this film for advertising itself as one thing and turning out to be not quite what was expected. So for those of you who haven't seen it... SPOILER ALERT... it doesn't feature that much of the Reaper and it doesn't have THAT much horror in it. Also, some of the better known actors in the film (Trejo, Vinnie, Busey) don't cross paths. There, relieved that all that's off my chest. Clearly, the marketing team behind this film felt it necessary to throw a lot of red herrings our way in the ads, and for the most part I think people aren't gonna take too kindly to it. BUT... that being said... if the above mentioned elements do not tick you off, then guess what... the film's NOT BAD! In fact, I thought it was pretty good entertainment- - A cool female-empowerment drug deal gone wrong at a haunted motel type thriller. The performances were solid, the twists and turns serviceable, and overall I enjoyed the show. Just beware that it's not exactly the show that was marketed, but that's not necessarily a bad thing in this case.
... View MoreThis falls squarely in the category of guilty pleasure films for me. The naysayers may rip it for its B-movie icon leads or for its supernatural killer haunting a hotel formula, but what they missed is that the film is just good, old-fashioned entertainment.I must admit it took me in a few directions I wasn't quite expecting, especially since (SPOILER ALERT) the titular badass isn't really the bulk of the film. Sure, he gets in a few solid kills but this is much more of a survival of the fittest crime thriller, and on that note I thoroughly enjoyed it.Overall, "Reaper" delivers exactly what it should: engaging escapism.
... View MoreThere seem to be a lot of false reviews for this movie. I enjoy b-grade movies of all types, especially horror movies. I have watched and enjoyed countless B-grade movies that most other people find appalling. I even enjoy watching Danny Trejo strut his stuff in many cheesy movies.Unfortunately, I did not enjoy this movie at all and would struggle to even call it a B-grade movie. It falls firmly into the C-grade pile of movies which have no redeeming qualities and are not even in the so bad it's funny category. I am very disappointed that I was fooled into watching this movie and wasting time that could have been spent watching something else. For some reason, I kept watching the movie hoping something good would happen, but it just got worse.Unless you are associated with the making of this film, you will not like it. Let me just reiterate that - YOU WILL NOT ENJOY THIS MOVIE. You've been warned.
... View MoreAn engaging little chiller which pays nice tribute to some of its more high- budget predecessors, "Reaper" is a formula-tested slasher flick with some good performances and a familiar but welcome vibe.A manipulative hitchhiker. A ruthless crime boss. A slick drug dealer. A darkly noble truck driver. A religious zealot. A trigger happy cop. Oh, and I forgot to mention a supernatural killer who looks a bit like Electro Man crossed with Bruce Willis at the end of "Unbreakable." Combine all of the above and you have the admittedly campy and surprisingly clever "Reaper." Any movie fan will identify the homages to classics like "Psycho," "The Shining," "From Dusk til Dawn," and "Shocker." Both mystery thriller and horror elements are nicely combined, resulting in a film that's a little Hitchcock, a little Rodriguez, and mostly just a lot of fun.
