A sheltered Amish child is the sole witness of a brutal murder in a restroom at a Philadelphia train station, and he must be protected. The assignment falls to a taciturn detective who goes undercover in a Pennsylvania Dutch community. On the farm, he slowly assimilates despite his urban grit, and forges a romantic bond with the child's beautiful mother.

I guess the detective had No Body he could trust or No Body he could go to about the corruption. Movie lost me when Ford gave up his gun and bullets to the woman. NO police detective would ever give up his gun when hunted by other corrupt cops. Totally Unbelievable. Found something else to watch.

This movie starts with the scene that a child witnesses a man being killed by the two murderers in a restroom. The child and his mother are chased by two killers because of the witness, so the detective helps them an pd lives in a country. I was very impressed with the scene that the boy witnesses the crime. One of the murderers checks all toilets when he hears the sound. The kid barely escape from the danger, but I can feel his tension from his expression. I was also scared that the killer peeps into a gap between the door and the floor. The camera angle makes me more horrible and tense. It was also memorable for me that the detective and the kid's mother run to and hug each other. I can feel they really love one another. and the impulse of their love makes them do such a passionate action from their serious expression. I like this movie because I can enjoy the tension of the detective, the mother ,and a kid. I can forget their tense expectations. I also enjoyed the heartbreaking love since I cannot imagine the ending of the two people.

An Amish boy Samuel witnesses a murder case in Philadelphia when he goes to Baltimore with his mother Rachel. John Book, a police detective, hides in Amish village with them when the killers come after them. This film has both suspense and human drama aspects.Pictures of this film is very beautiful and Maurice Jarre's soundtrack is also excellent.I didn't know the existence of "Amish" until I watched this film. I like an atmosphere of a quiet and pastoral Amish life and envy their self-sufficient life.I could enter the world of Amish easily through this film. I think that the Amish beautiful life is a contrast with the horrible murder case. There are a lot of memorable scenes in this film, but I was especially impressed by the scene where John Book builds a shed with Amish people. It is wonderful to make something cooperating with companions.I think that cross-cultural understanding is difficult and it is important to accept difference each other.

Rachel Lapp (Kelly McGillis) recently lost her husband. She and her son Samuel (Lukas Haas) are traveling from Pennsylvania by train to visit her sister in Baltimore. While waiting for a transfer, Samuel witnesses a murder at the Philadelphia train station bathroom. The victim is a policeman. Det. John Book (Harrison Ford) hounds Samuel for an ID. At the police station, he recognizes James McFee (Danny Glover)'s picture as one of the two killers but he's a police lieutenant. Book tells Chief Paul Schaeffer (Josef Sommer) but he's in on the corruption. McFee shots Book. He drives them back to their home to hide. He passes out as he's leaving the Lapp home.Director Peter Weir infuses this with tension. The main actors are all terrific. The clash of cultures is compelling and handled well. It's well written. The crime drama is tightly wound like a great coil readying to spring.
