I really like this musical. It was pretty much ignored when it came out. With Disney at the helm, it had a reasonable audience. It is the story of newsboys during hard times, trying to make a few bucks peddling their papers, when the bosses, like Joseph Pulitzer, couldn't care less about them and their lives. Not only are they not respected, the bosses begin to raise the prices on the papers (papes) they sell, giving them much less profit. They live on a delicate balance because they have to sell every paper or they are stuck for the cost of the unsold ones. This leads talk of unionizing. Unionizing at this time in America was seen as communism and this led to some head bashing. There are some great songs in this film, and some outstanding choreography. One current development that has boosted this movie is the fact that there is now a Broadway production that has had tremendous popularity. People who never saw this film are now watching it.

What happens when you combine rising, young actors, catchy songs, and the magic of Disney? The movie musical Newsies is created. The film takes place in New York City, and centers its plot on the newsboys' strike of 1899. Newsies follows the story of a newspaper boy named Jack Kelly (Christian Bale) who becomes an unlikely hero during this rebellion against the great newspaper powers of Joseph Pulitzer (Robert Duvall) and William Hearst. After Pulitzer and Hearst decide to raise the price of a newspaper a tenth of a cent, the newsies find it completely unfair, and decide to rally together from all parts of the city and go on strike against the papers. With the help of friends like David (David Moscow) and his younger brother Les (Luke Edwards), Jack is successful in making the newspaper boy rebellion ignite a spark among all child laborers in New York to not stand for the unjust treatment anymore. Although the Newsies is based off the historical event of the newsboys' strike, it isn't entirely accurate. For example, Jack Kelly was not the leader of the strike in 1899; it was actually a young man known as Kid Blink. Aside from the multiple errors in historical accuracy, the Newsies is still worth the watch. The singing is phenomenal, and although cheesy at times, it helps keep the film lighthearted. The choreography and dancing makes you want to leap out of your chairs and move along with boys. There is a little bit of romance, a little bit of humor, a little bit of history, and a lot of fun for a family to watch. The Newsies will have you rooting for the underdogs, and it might make you want to enroll in a few dance classes! Rated PG

Newsies, Informing and Entertaining Newsies is a 1992 musical inspired by the real-life New York City Newsboy Strike of 1899. Newsies is a Disney movie directed by Kenny Ortega that later became a Broadway musical. This movie features Christian Bale, also known for his appearance in The Dark Knight, playing Jack Kelly and David Moscow playing David Jacobs. Newsies won a Razzie Award for Worst Original Song. It was also nominated for a Young Artist Award for an Outstanding Young Ensemble Cast in a Motion Picture. It starts off with a group of newspaper boys. The leader of the group is Jack Kelly, 17, who is known for a trouble-making past. When prices of the newspapers raise, Jack Kelly and the newsies, make a stand to go against the man in charge, Pulitzer. The boys find ways to go against the newspaper to be heard. Newsies, a family-friendly movie, is a classic movie for all to enjoy. Although there were a few unnecessary characters brought into the film, overall it was an amazing movie. The soundtrack is very catchy and the choreography is fun and personalized for each boy. Newsies brings attention to the harsh reality of struggle that the young boys went through. I would strongly recommend this informing, yet interesting movie.

1992 Musical is a Must SeeA 1992 musical starring young, fiery boys ready to take on the world is here to stay. Newsies, a Disney movie directed by Kenny Ortega, has been out for more than 20 years and is still watched by many. The movie surrounds the real story of young boys in New York who sell newspaper for a living. It touches on the harsh reality of the lives of boys at this time. The movie goes on to show the progress of these boy's strike against the newspaper companies. The movie very closely follows the historical events of the time, which makes it more informative, but also interesting to watch. Newsies amazing success is due in part to the cast. Characters such as Jack Kelly, played by Christian Bale, and David, played by David Moscow, made the show thrilling and lovable. Actor Robert Duvall, who played Pulitzer, seemed to lack character and passion. Although Duvall's character dragged, the overall effect was amazing. Another strong point through the musical was the dancing and singing. The choreography was spectacular and added a deeper level to the movie. In my opinion on Newsies is that is is a lovable, family friendly movie that is a must see for all. I would give this movie 4 ½ stars out of 5 and recommend that you go see it as soon as you can.
