I stumbled upon this film years ago and due to the recent popularity of a review I wrote, I decided to write reviews for films that deserve praise. I had always been a fan of Donald Glover, I can't pinpoint exactly when I discovered him but I think it was around the time his special "Weirdo" came out. Through the help of IMDb I discovered he was in a film called "Mystery Team." It was available for free on Hulu so I decided to give it a shot...And I laughed my buttocks off! I honestly have not laughed harder at a movie than I did when I was watching Mystery Team. DERRICK comedy delivered a hilarious screenplay and well-executed acting. This film may not be for anyone though. The target audience is likely men ages 18-30. Which is why I think it's ratings might be skewed a bit but it is definitely worth the watch. It is full of unpredictable laughs right until the very last scene.thefilmclerk.wordpress.com

Jason Rogers (Donald Glover), Duncan Wheeler (DC Pierson), and Charlie Day (Dominic Dierkes) are the Mystery Team since they're little kids. They are high school seniors who are played by actors who are too old as characters who are too old to solve mysteries which are too silly. Then the guys are hired by young Brianna Peters to solve her parents' murders. Jason falls for Brianna's sister Kelly (Aubrey Plaza).Donald Glover is a great up-and-coming comic actor. Aubrey Plaza is wasted playing the straight character. She would be better utilized as one of the Mystery Team. DC Pierson is fine especially with his hair cut. Dominic Dierkes is a dud. Sometimes these comedy troupes need to understand their limitations. Ellie Kemper is also under-used. The story would be funnier if it's even stupider. The murder mystery does need a bit more. It could be great to have the mystery solved but the guys can't see it for some grown-up reason. Kelly could kiss Jason awakening his adult self which allows him to see the solution.

One day, I was lucky to find derrick comedy when scrolling through youtube on a boring Sunday afternoon, as I recall. This troupe led the way for many others, since it was the first youtube "channel" with scripted comedy videos. Some of there videos, such as "Bro Rape" and "Jazz Man" are literally hysterical and will have you rolling on the floor spurting with laughter. I don't know why this movie was so underrated, maybe it was due to there limited release in theaters and how it was billed as an "independent" comedy. Nonetheless, the movie is truly hysterical, due to how the dialogue remains sharp and witty through the one and a half hour venture. Also, how oblivious the three main characters toward everything and how situations get progressively worse for them, makes the movie a worthwhile and fun time. If you are at least 14/15 or older or derrick comedy fans, you really don't want to miss out on this great and funny film. If you enjoy the film, which you did :), I will recommend Donald Glover's stand-up show "Weirdo" because his stand up performance had a similar feel to this film. I hope to see more from donald glover and have high expectations for the "Atlanta" series, premiering on FX. You'll have a great time with this very funny film for the great parody and excellent comedic dialogue.

The gist of the movie is explained plenty in reviews before this one so I won't get into it. Instead I just wanted to throw in my two cents in an effort to help guide other IMDb visitors.I picked up Mystery Team with a "free movie" coupon but I still feel like to wasted gas running out to pick it up. I made it through the first 20 minutes or so but man, it's really unwatchable. YouTube-length DERRICK comedy clips are great and I can appreciate the time and effort that go into them. The cast is great, the content is definitely original and they are generally hilarious. But the comedy just didn't translate to a full feature-length flick. Maybe things really picked up in the next hour?
