Warwick Davis' evil leprechaun has been to the country, to Las Vegas, and even to space! The next logical location is the hood, right? Three would be rappers steal jewels and gold from a pimp played by Ice-T, and unwittingly release the evil leprechaun, who once again kills everyone who gets in the way of him finding his gold. The leprechaun was wisely never made out a dark or serious of horror villain, so placing him onto the mean streets of the hood only adds to the comedic elements of the character and franchise. The genre mash-up of horror and urban street dramas is comic gold with the leprechaun getting shot up by drive-by shooters and smoking weed a Coolio lookalike. How can you resist? And the Leprechaun in a full-body flame stunt alone was worth the price of admission (or at least worth watching it on TV).
... View MoreHoping to break into the music business, a rap group inadvertently steals a magical flute from a mischievous leprechaun, reviving him in the process who sets out on a rampage to get it back and forcing them to stop him. This one here wasn't that bad and had enough going for it to be entertaining. One of the better feature here comes from the absolutely cheesy and somewhat ridiculous storyline in here that really makes no sense why this plays out as it does. Transposing an Irish leprechaun into an urban, predominantly African-American neighborhood makes so little sense on the surface of it that there's a sense of cheesy giddiness at watching this go through the community which takes this one to a wholly different level than the other entries in the series. There's even more to like here with the film's few action set-pieces throughout here which gives this a nice mixture of cheesy action and great thrilling moments for a really enjoyable time here. The opening release of the creature down in the subway room as he kills his assistant before turning to him and gets stopped through circumstance gets this off to a fine start, the actual robbery here comes off in a fine matter with the resulting gunfight to get away being rather thrilling and the encounter in the church where they all stumble across each other and each group fights it out with each other in order to get away, all resulting in in some rather fun and engaging action here that manages to fall in line nicely with the rest of the franchise's action. Along with the nice blood and gore in the kills, these here are enough to make this one enjoyable enough to hold out over the few flaws. The film's biggest issue is the fact that there's a lot of time spent on integrating the leprechaun into this particular environment by overloading the rap genre in here to the point of getting irritating with all the different segments here that features show-stopping moments to get them performed. The incessant gangster talk and rap battles that constantly feature continuous allusions to that lifestyle which eats up so much time here that there's almost no screen-time for the leprechaun's antics. He hardly ever tricks people in what he does, appears more as a straightforward killer with supernatural powers and doesn't really do much here to suggest he was integral to the film when any supernatural avenger would've been inserted into the film without any difficulty. This here is the main issue with this one as there's some problems the film can't really recover from. Despite the few positives in here being quite good.Rated R: Extreme Graphic Language, Graphic Violence and continuous drug use.
... View MoreHave you seen what human beings do to each other, I mean man, whats the point? Yeah I've been intoxicated and seen this movie more than once. I've passionately defended this movie and fantasized about making a Leprechaun western. We make choices and we live with them. Do you want to know the plot of this movie? The plot is humans dream, and those dreams fuel us to struggle for unattainable goals, goals that ultimately destroy us. We mark our achievements with meaningless baubles and then suffer from the hollowness of these baubles. Does the Leprechaun smoke pot? Yes. Is there nudity? I don't remember but probably. There are good scenes in this movie but they appear in spite of producers wishes, y'know like no one can entirely screw up a movie, some particle always shines. I mean at some point some one has to ask why expend the effort and money to make these movies, yes Warwick Davis gets something out of this as short actors are desperate for work, Hollywood has a bias, but what do you and I get out of it? Entertainment is a nice way of saying utter pointlessness.
... View MoreThree up and coming rappers (Postmaster P, Stray Bullet, Butch) decide to rob the studio of a record label mogul, but they end up wakening the Leprechaun instead in "Leprechaun In The Hood". It begins with Ice T's character "Mack Daddy" and a friend who, will looking for gold, come across the leprechaun who is stone-like thanks to a magical gold chain wrapped around his neck. Mack Daddy takes the leprechaun's gold and the leprechaun "statue", and becomes a famous rap producer. Fast forward many years to our main cast of young rappers who are trying to make it big. Their audition for Mack Daddy fails, so they decide to rob him. Of course they end up bringing the Leprechaun to life, creating a lengthy chase around Compton. It's the leprechaun chasing the young men for his gold back, and Mack Daddy chasing them to get revenge for the robbery in this fifth installment of the Leprechaun series.Leprechaun in the Hood follows the same rules used in the third film. The gold chain put around the Lep's neck keeps him captured/stone-like, and the moment it comes off he is able to roam free. I liked that they followed some sort of a timeline, which the fourth Leprechaun failed at doing. We are also introduced to something new in this one - the Leprechaun's gold flute. The flute (when played) has the ability to temporarily stun other people in the room. It also has the ability to give the person whatever they want. For example, our group of rappers use it to make their listening audience LOVE their music when in reality it wouldn't have gotten such attention. This Leprechaun does well in that it actually develops the main character's! We feel for the guys as they are being pursued by the Mack and the evil Leprechaun, something that was missing in Leprechaun 4 and even the 3rd one to an extent. These men are trying to make it big to get out of the poverty stricken neighbourhood, and you feel that depressing undertone a lot in this one. The acting is alright, Ice-T being the big name of the film doesn't really have a MAJOR role, but serves his purpose. The three main characters do a decent job with Anthony Montgomery leading the way as good guy Postmaster P. There is quite a fair amount of gore in this one compared to the previous film, and it's actually well done. Overall, 'Leprechaun in the Hood' is an improvement to the space sequel. It punched some life to this franchise, BUT fails to recapture the laughs and campy fun that was found in the first three films. Oh well, at least the Leprechaun is back to rhyming his words after each kill...5/10
