What SHAUN OF THE DEAD did for the UK, and ZOMBIELAND did for the US, this film does for Cuba. Juan is a deadbeat slacker trying to reconnect with his daughter before she moves with her mom to Miami. But wouldn't ya know? The locals are acting weird, eating and attacking people. Government officials and the TV insist that it's just a capitalist conspiracy, but it soon becomes hard to deny the zombies in the street. So Juan, along with a few friends, sets about doing what any normal person would do: Start a zombie-extermination business (hence the title of the film). Armed with an array of unusual weapons, the team makes a good living. That is until... Overall, it's an even blend of humor and horror. There are some rather inventive zombie deaths in this one. Also, a good portion of the comedy is based on the characters and their interactions with each other. Sometimes, the subtitles are hard to follow. But aside from that, this is a worthy zomedy (or zom-com) that's worth tracking down!
... View MoreI was bored and looking for something new to watch. Nothing on Netflix caught my interest. I searched for video on demand and saw this title on HBO. The title immediately reminded me of Shaun of the dead. I was slightly surprised when the film began and I saw the subtitles. The zombie craze has made its way to Cuba? Fortunately I am bilingual and having worked with Cuban refugees I know a lot about the political climate in that country. It does turn out that the country and its conditions play a major part in what makes this film what it is. However even if you are not that familiar just sit back and be educated. You wont be disappointed. Juan is a loser who surrounds himself with others much like himself. They are all completely clueless as to the cause of the zombie uprising and instead believe what the government is telling them. That the cause of the trouble is merely US interference and that the trouble makers are thus all dissidents. Word to the wise, never believe what your government tells you. Things digress from here. The "dissidents" appear to be gaining ground. Juan and his band of merry miscreants are forced to deal with the new society. This has to be one of the best zombie movies ever. It deserves to be watched by as many as possible. I really hope Hollyweird doesn't decide to make an American version like they do for so many other movies. It's setting are intricate to the plot.
... View MoreOK, first of all this isn't a rip off of Shaun of the Dead, so put that out of your mind. It does owe a little to Shaun, but it goes off on an original tangent. Like most zombie movies, the reason for the dead rising is obscured by government B.S. The Cuban government (which is hysterical) constantly claims that it's the U.S. Government, helping subversives. the main cast is very engaging and the main two are a pair of major slackers, Juan constantly referring to surviving Mariel, Angola and a host of other troubles. I'm actually amazed that the Cuban government allowed this to made, since it is a bit subversive and down on the communist regime. As usual, our heroes have to find a way to survive, which is all I'll say. Its way better than The Dead, which was a bit boring for the most part. Homages to other zombie films, including one to Lucio Fulci's Zombie (which is hysterical) abound. My only complaint was that the frakking subtitles were yellow and in parts were hard to read. Other than that, this is way better than anything that's been done on Chiller or the SF channel, as well as Romero's last, "Survival of the Dead", which was a terrible film. So if you get a chance, are a zombie fan, see Juan of the Dead. It'll be a fun time for all.
... View MoreAfter the popularity of Shaun of the Dead, the zombie film culture created by George Romero jumped back center stage with hundreds of films hitting the shelves. Just like every other genre, there are good and bad ones, but when they are bad they are usually unwatchable, but when they work they are great fun. The latest attempt at this genre Juan of the Dead, not only shares a similar title, but takes the same direction of Shaun, but could this Cuban zombie flick have any chance of living up to its potential? Juan of the Dead follows Juan and his rag tag group of friends that try to take advantage of the zombie outbreak by charging people to kill them. With his new found business motto "we'll kill your beloved ones" they set out on a rampage of survival, profit, and carnage. While this film is produced and could be looked at as a rip off of Shaun it sets its own tone to create a funny, bloody good time. The story is pretty simple with just enough story idea to keep the film moving, but not enough to clutter it with unnecessary plot holes. At first it seems like it may be a bit low budget, but quickly showcases some great make-up work with the zombie effects and does not hold back on the blood. Much like most these days it mixes CG and practical effects blood, but is executed great. This film also sports some interesting cast of characters and over the top humor that helps to step this film up to the level deserving of this genre. There is no shortage of zombie killing action as well as some surprisingly creative kills.Don't let the fact that this movie is subtitled deter you from checking it out. This is easily one of the better additions to this genre to come along in some time. Everything about it works to create an over the top zombie killing gore fest that any fans of the genre will love. Even though they aren't directly connected to each other, this is a great companion film to Shaun of the Dead that will hopefully catch on and get the respect it deserves.http://www.examiner.com/movie-in-dallas/bobby-blakey
