The only thing this film had going for it was the acting. Completely unnecessary jabs are taken at trans people; tired, racist tropes are used to try and elicit a laugh; and in the end the take home message is that the depression the protagonist is feeling was nothing more than self indulgence. This was garbage, and it was an awful message to send to young people who deal with depression, which is a real thing that causes real pain and suffering. This film was awful, don't waste your time.

I love how this movie not only makes you think about how fortunate you are, but also shows you how to deal with minor issues that have the potential to depress you.Zach plays his role so well that you can tell he has been through it all. His facial expressions are perfectly in sync with his role. Also, when the Egyptian guy finally breaks free and starts dancing to the Egyptian song definitely put a smile on my face - Being Egyptian myself I admired the scene and character greatly. I would definitely recommend this movie to you if you are looking for a laugh and a lesson on how to enjoy life more often.Favorite Quote:"God please grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference."

From the opening scene of this movie I was enveloped in the story being told, I've had many high peaks and subsequently many low valleys during the years I've been alive and the self-doubting, socially awkward personality of the main character was in so many ways like looking in the mirror for me. The supporting characters were perfectly performed especially Zack Galifianakis and Emma Roberts. This movie is poorly categorized as a comedy in my opinion, it's more of an inspirational movie with occasional moments of light-hearted, almost cynical views of mental illness, the struggles people endure and the effects those struggles can have on people. So while I'm sure there's many people that completely disagree with this review for me personally this movie was everything I could've hoped for and so much more.

I'm actually glad to have not read the novel because I wouldn't waste my time reading something pointless. I thought the movie and the storyline had no meaning at all. Yes I know it's about a teenage boy admitting himself to a Mental Institution since he was unfortunately suicidal. I just think the actor who played him didn't seem interested in his role. He just didn't give that click to fall in love with the character enough. It made me think, why couldn't they have gotten an older actor playing the teenager? It would be totally different and a lot better since they would have more experience then a teenage actor. I don't think a love story would suit anything for this kind of movie, it just kinda holds me back on concentrating on the teen. He should've at least made a new friend and that would be more better then a love interest. I don't want to brag too much because it just didn't satisfy me at all. It is the worst adaption ever!
