I personally felt that the movie was absolutely worth watching. JoJo and Roberts' friendship was very lovely. Even though the trailer looked much more promising, the movie was OK except for being a bit slow. The idea that love could be found in friends is admirable. I think it is a perfect movie to watch with friends.

Hailey and Claire are two teenage best friends who live by a busy beach, but as the years have gone on the club run by Claire's grandparents has seen much better days. The girls have only a short time before Hailey has to move to Australia for her mom's work. Claire lost both her parents when they drowned, so she has a fear of water, which isn't so great for her since she's a resident of Florida where swimming and partying is the big thing. Their big goal is to attract Raymond, a lifeguard whom every girl in town thinks is hot.One day they find a mermaid named Aquamarine in the beach club's swimming pool after a violent storm. They befriend her and try to help her avoid an arranged undersea marriage by showing her to Raymond; meanwhile both girls try to hatch a plan to keep Hailey from moving. The only help they have is from a nutty but kind caretaker working at the beach club, and they have to avoid Cecelia, a snotty popular girl, from discovering what Aquamarine is.This is a movie aimed at teenage girls, so obviously it's way too dramatic to take seriously, along with bad pop soundtrack and not the best acting. The story itself is pretty good, however I liked the book by Alice Hoffman much better and think the movie could do with some improvements. It's not bad, but easily predictable and not very memorable.

Aquamarine is one of those movies where one doesn't expect much going into the theater. The film starts out excruciating and annoying in its girly girlishness. Tween pop sensation Jo Jo Levesque and Emma Roberts star as tweens fascinated by, what else, boys and prancing around on the beach in summer. The girls are no match for a queen bee and her cohorts who are aiming for the same male lifeguard as they. Insert plot point: mermaid gets washed ashore during storm and befriends two tween girls. As a result, fun and adventure ensues. Sara Paxton plays the mermaid who must link up with the same said lifeguard in order to experience human love...or receive an acknowledgment of such. Things were a little hazy in that department. Levesque and Roberts work well with each other, and Roberts is especially good in her role as the shy, sensitive girl who must come to grips with her dependence on her friend. The first part of the film is riddled with clichéd dialog and scenes for the age demographic, but the film improves as it goes along. All in all, it's still formulaic, but the performances of the two leads makes it better than expected. The film's ending also contains a nice subtle message about friendship for today's kids who are all too often wrapped up in growing up much too fast. ** of 4 stars.

I thought this a lovely movie ... and I'm 35 - no kids and no plans for them either. I adore Unicorns, Elves, Faeries, Witches, Wizards and yes Mermaids too ... and all things mystical and magical and I love kids movies ... and I collect toys and I'm proud to say so. Although I could have done with less of the boy-swooning and more on Aquamarine, her father and her underwater world. Although the mermaid took a while to show up, but when she did the movie started to pick up more. She was innocent, lovely, but naive - and a pretty, skinny girl who *wasn't* a b!tch!! Good stuff! I liked Jo Jo and Emma as well. It was a cute movie. The mean chicks were lame, but they're lame in real life too. Cecilia's indignation near the end, to be dumped for a fish, cracked me up. Bullshark ... Who would you choose? A magical, mystical, majestic mermaid, or a mean, mediocre, moronic, muggle? I know who I'd choose! And those blue streaks rocked! It could have had a few more funny scenes though, say with Aquamarine freaking out about people eating fish ... and perhaps Cecelia making a big deal of eating a delicious battered fish near Aquamarine ... and her friends sheepishly try to tell Aquamarine that yes, people do eat fish ... And then Aquamarine squeals "Cooked fish?! Eww!! Gross!" And takes her friends to the sushi bar, leaving Cecelia like "what?!" ;) ... And at Cecelia's comments about the "Grandmother's convention" due to Aquamarine's blue streaks, it would have been funny if the mermaid had told her that Elder Women in her 'pod' have pink streaks, and such an honour will not be bestowed upon her for another 2580 years ... and leave Cecelia like ... huh? ;) ... Perhaps the fans should have a say in the script writing! And it seems some dimwits reviewing this movie didn't even *get* that there are many types of love - romantic being just one. Aquamarine's father, Poseidon~Neptune (King of the Seas), I presume, was touched by Hailey and Claire's love for their very special friend. Hailey even *said* so in the movie. Helooooooooooo!!! How more OBVIOUS can you get!!! Duh, people!!! Seems Mer-People have more brains than a lot of humans.I thought it was great how Aquamarine did not want to be human (this would have been so clichéd otherwise), though she fell in love with one. And the ending of the movie was much more realistic than most movies like these ... even parting the seas (pardon the pun, lol) for a sequel. I would love to see Hailey and her family visit Claire and Aquamarine swims all the way down to Australia ... Maybe her father will even give her a lift on a dolphin ;) ... And maybe I'll get to see her too and the blue streaked mermaid will take us to her world ...
