Young lovers Charlie (Chad Lowe) and Rachel (Kristy Swanson) are en route to Vegas where they intend to get married, but are forced to postpone their nuptials when they take a shortcut down a dark back road that is patrolled by a devilish cop (C.J. Graham), who whisks Charlie's bride-to-be to Hell. With only 24 hours in which to save his betrothed, Charlie follows the hell-cop into the netherworld and encounters numerous strange obstacles…From Ate De Jong, the director of Drop Dead Fred, Highway To Hell is an offbeat horror/fantasy movie so full of arbitrary action and random characters that it feels like a lot of it was made up on the fly whilst stoned (when, in fact, it was written by Brian Helgeland, who would later win an Oscar for his screenplay for L.A. Confidential). As such, the film has no doubt garnered a small but loyal cult following, although I found the whole thing to be just a little too scattershot for its own good, the somewhat aimless approach hindering my enjoyment of the film rather than helping it.Decent visual effects (including a stop-motion Cerberus), effective SFX makeup (a female demon with saggy tits being my favourite creation), nice cinematography and fun cameos help matters (look out for a pre-fame Ben Stiller as both a diner cook and Attila the Hun, and sexy '80s rocker Lita Ford as a hitch-hiker), but when all is said and done, Highway to Hell isn't quite as rockin' as its title suggests (and no, the AC/DC song doesn't feature on the soundtrack).

~Spoiler~Highway to Hell is one of the most interesting and off-the-wall horror/comedies that came out of the 90's. It's about a young couple (played by Kristy Swanson and Chad Lowe) who take the wrong road out in the middle of the desert. It's the highway to hell, hence the title, and the Hellcop who patrols this area gives our young couple one hell of a time. Bad pun, I know. This is one of those movies that sounds incredibly silly on paper but just has to be seen. Along with Swanson and Lowe, Highway to Hell stars Patrick Bergin, Adam Storke, and Pamela Gidley. The really cool actor here though is the Hellcop. He's played by C.J. Graham and this is Graham's only other role besides playing Jason is Friday the 13th Part 6. There are a ton of cameos in this film too. The late, great Richard Farnsworth, Lita Ford, both Jerry and Ben Stiller, and Kevin Peter Hall all pop up for a minute or two. And Gilbert Gottfried plays Hitler. Like I said earlier, this one has to be seen to be appreciated. It's not the best movie you will ever see, but it's entertaining and that's what counts with this kind of film.

Didn't catch the whole thing, but what I saw was a goofy sendup of the Greek tale of Orpheus and Eurydice, with Chad Lowe standing in for the Big O and Kristy Swanson a gorgeous Eurydice. In this version, perhaps to keep the Catholics in the audience happy, Satan himself appears and is in charge of the underworld. He is played by the eternally stone-faced Patrick Bergen. Plus Gilbert Gottfried shows up as Hitler and Ben Stiller and his dad have brief roles. Actually, for my money, the most interesting character is the Hellcop, who kidnaps Swanson and drags her down into the underworld, with Lowe in (pardon the pun) hot pursuit. Not as bad as MONKEYBONE or YOR, but not nearly as interesting as BEETLEJUICE. Drink heavily before watching.

I saw this movie a long time ago. It's hard to find. But, I remember that I liked it a lot, and would like to see it again. Please release on DVD! So many movies these days don't stick in your mind after you see them. I saw this a long time ago, and I still remember that it was a good film.
