A choice example of the horror film during the early '80s, EVILSPEAK is a wacky and delightful mumbo-jumbo shocker which boasts a sterling performance from weirdo Clint Howard (TICKS) in one of his few leading roles. The clichéd plot instantly rips off CARRIE with a gender-bending variation on the central theme: a boy at military school is tormented and abused by fellow pupils and teachers alike, so takes revenge by summoning down the wrath of Satan upon them. The best method to do this? By using his badly dated '80s computer, of course! One of the few films to contain an evil computer as one of the leading characters, EVILSPEAK makes great and cheesy use of this premise to spread some maximum mayhem come the finale. Before the gory conclusion we are treated to a fairly slow-paced film which attempts to be serious – making it all the more amusing to watch. Enjoyment is heightened by the over-the-top efforts of a cast all striving to outdo themselves – from the Nazi history teacher to the cruel P.E. coach and the dumb jocks who make Clint's life a misery. Two genuinely good performances are given by the underused old-timer R.G. Armstrong as the drunken "Sarge" and Howard himself as Coopersmith, the put-upon orphan who finds himself possessed by Satan. Howard's acting is damned good and he holds interest during many of the slow spots. Keep your eyes out for creepy Richard Moll in another effectively evil performance. The music score, kind of an over-the-top variation of the music from THE OMEN, adds to the entertainment value immensely.EVILSPEAK's off-kilter approach to the material makes it more entertaining than many similarly low-budget slasher films doing the rounds at the time. This is a film where evil is pixelated on a computer screen in many colourful and cool interludes. Where an attractive actress is gored to death by killer hogs in her bathtub after a gratuitous nude scene. Where a man is thrown vertically upwards to be impaled on a chandelier. Where a guy's head twists around back to front in a cheap EXORCIST imitation. On top of this we get some cheesy gore scenes involving people being decapitated by swords, a heart ripped out of a chest and much much more, scenes which have been jarringly cut out of the film in even the US version – the only flaw the film contains. I would pay good money to watch the uncut Canadian release of this cheese classic. EVILSPEAK is an always-involving "possession" style horror film, worth watching alone for the fiery climax in church which has to be seen to be believed.

Skip this one; it's not even campy enough for laughs. You get a 75 minute bore-fest, followed by 5 minutes of carnage with some of the effects so bad (like Clint Howard having a bad hair day as he hovers on visible wires) you wonder just how minuscule WAS the budget for this cheapie. When I saw "Evilspeak" in the theater in 1981, I hadn't noticed Clint Howard in anything since TV's "Gentle Ben" a decade before, when he was about 5. And (come to think of it) I haven't noticed him in much since, except bit parts in his big bro Ron's movies. Well, since he had to "carry" the entire movie on his limited acting skills, it's no wonder. And as for summoning up a demon on that laughable, stone-age computer... all I can say is "Estevan" must be a real low-grade demon, indeed! Makes even "Pazuzu" of "Exorcist II: The Heretic" look menacing and scary.

This 1981 horror film stars Clint Howard, R.G. Armstrong, Joe Cortese, Don Stark, Charles Tyner and Richard Moll. This begins in Spain with Priest, Esteban (Moll) who becomes banished for practicing Satanic rituals. We move to the present where we meet troubled, military cadet, Stanley Coopersmith (Howard) who gets picked on by some of the guys in his academy and also puts up with demanding teachers. Soon, Coopersmith finds an ancient text belonging to Esteban that contains black magic and he translates it via computer to invoke the evil spirit to strike back at his tormentors. Armstrong (Predator) plays drunk worker, Sarge, Cortese plays priest, Jameson, Stark (That 70's Show) plays main bully, Bubba and Tyner (The Outlaw Josey Wales) plays Colonel Kincaid. This is a good horror/revenge flick and Howard is great in it. If you're into horror & occult flicks, I recommend this.

Clint Howard plays a dorky cadet Stanley Coppersmith terrorized and abused by his teammates at the West Andover Military Academy. But all hell will break loose when Stanley finds a black mass book belonging to a 16th century Satanist named Esteban. The computer translates the passages from the book and Satan becomes its ghastly entity."Evilspeak" by Eric Weston is an odd horror movie which was once classified as a video nasty in UK.It plays like a male version of "Carrie" with plenty of gore including the scenes of a naked woman eaten alive in her bathtub by flesh-eating boars. Also heads are cut off and cloven in two, limbs removed,a heart is ripped still beating from the chest. There is a bit of nudity too.Very bloody climax is unbelievable and gruesome at the same time.8 cannibalistic boars out of 10.
