Did I see this? Sure, about eight years ago when it came out on DVD of course! Do I remember much from it? Absolutelyf**king not! No, wait, Robert Forster IS in this, and he acted and did things! And the CGI is so absolutely insane and all of a piece. Dragon Wars... is what it is, and it's great for a night with friends who know how to take it the opposite of seriously. I'd think if you watch this alone it won't be as much fun though. You really need the communal experience of sitting with a bunch of people who want to watch dragons of different shapes and varieties (though mostly of the gigantic kind) destroying buildings and fighting with giant helicopters as cardboard character cut-outs stand around yelling orders and saying things that are meant to pass as English words. It's a movie that's so poor that had it been made 20 years earlier or 40 years earlier or so on, it would be one of the timeless classics for fans of Mystery Science Theater 3000 - but this goes without saying it's completely understandable why it has its cult following (if it does, I haven't check the internet lately...)
... View MoreOh c'mon now, its not that bad, I mean, yeah its really bad but not terrible terrible bad. If you were to poll all the people who said this movie was awful, the majority while correct in classifying this movie as crap also enjoyed watching it. Yes every aspect is sh*tty, how is the acting? sh*tty, how is the story/writing? sh*tty, how is the directing? how are the special effects? Ask how whatever was with this movie the answer will always be sh*tty. Now for the blame game- whose fault was this movie? The writer? The Studio? The director? The producer? Should we blame the audience? I saw this movie in the theater and later purchased it on DVD, and I knew it was bad each instance, should I shoulder some of this movie's blame? Life is a mystery.
... View MoreA lame and pointless CGI fest in which the entire budget is spent on huge, hulking and elaborate city-wide battle sequences of monsters versus the army in scenes that feel inspired by TRANSFORMERS. The opening storyline, which gets entirely forgotten about around the half hour mark, is absolutely cringe-worthy, along the lines of something equally ridiculous and kid-friendly like DRAGONBALL EVOLUTION.The acting is even worse: this is a South Korean production, made in collaboration with Hollywood so that we get a load of young and inexperienced American actors popping up in central roles. It goes without saying that they're horrible, although eagle-eyed viewers may notice a slumming Robert Forster (JACKIE BROWN) turning up in one of those world-weary mentor type roles.Meanwhile, I do have to admit that the CGI is impressive. Those massed pitched battles are carried out with gusto and a maximum of destruction, and the creatures on show put to shame the kinds of low-budget CGI monstrosities that prop up many a television movie. But, in the end, without a decent storyline to support them, who cares about the quality of the effects on show? DRAGON WARS might as well be a cartoon for all it's worth, and any viewers over the age of five are going to find it lacking.
... View MoreDragon Wars did have potential to work and ought to have done. But what we had was a film that did have that potential but wasted it with poor execution. I will give it some credit and say that the scenery and settings are beautiful and the effects while not great are at least decent, an asset I was dubious about in all honesty. The dragons do look imposing and do have presence which does elevate things a lot. But oh my goodness so many things spoilt Dragon Wars. The direction is nothing but flat, everything just lacks life and nothing stands out. The dialogue is very poor, with cheesy one-liners and hackneyed flow of the overall script, while no time at all is spent developing the characters, all they are at the end of the day are standard and in some cases annoying clichés. I have no better news about the acting either, Jason Behr is hopelessly wooden and has no charisma whatsoever. Robert Forster was the best of the entire cast, and even he was generic. But what really made Dragon Wars as bad as it was was the story. It is one thing to have a simple story, but when it is over-simplistic and structurally thin that is another matter entirely. Everything lumbered on with no sense of heart, surprises or excitement while any climatic scenes felt rushed. Overall, the production values and dragons are not bad, but everything else pretty much is. 3/10 Bethany Cox
