Comedy Horrors are hard to take seriously in the means that most of them are spoofs, parodies or just plain silly. The New Zealand film industry has taken off quite a bit in recent years with the likes of Taika Waititi or James Napier Robertson, director Jason Lei Howden makes his own entrance within this new wave with his directorial debut "Deathgasm"."Deathgasm" is about Brodie, a heavy metal loving teenager who tries to cope with his new life after moving in with overly orthodox Christian uncle, since his mother had been institutionalized. His high school life is tough, being treated like an outcast and is more or less forced to befriend nerds. Shortly after they form a heavy metal band called "Deathgasm" and one of his new acquaintances tells him about a famous metal musician Rikki Daggers, who has been hiding from society in a nearby abandoned house. They search the place and find sheets of music hidden inside a record. Naturally, they go on and play the notes from the sheets with the whole band, unknowingly summoning an ancient evil called "The Blind one". At this point, the fun begins as they try to preventing the demon's resurrection. The premise is interesting by which I mean that you don't often see comedies revolving around heavy metal (and not emo) that are actually well-intended. The imaginative main character is someone that you could relate too, even for someone who doesn't necessarily enjoy that musical genre. The acting is alright, nothing too outstanding but enjoyable nonetheless. The movie is faced-paced with quick cuts and sleek filming style like Guy Ritchie or Paul Greengrass in "The Bourne Trilogy", topping it all off with the delightful New Zealand accent just makes it even greater. Some jokes and situations were witty and originals while others were just strange and immature, reminding me of "Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse"."Deathgasm" is more than a B-Horror film, it's actually part-entertaining part-quality and it must definitely not be overlooked by fans of the horror genre. "Deathgasm" works well when watched with a small group of friends.

The movie started off great, but the climax was well... not that great(kinda sucked, but not horrible). But can't complain, since it's a dark comedy intended to purely entertain and that part it does well. Overall, a pretty good dark comedy, that you'll enjoy even more if you are a metal lover(I am). Certainly worth watching.

I had no expectations to "Deathgasm" when I sat down to watch it. In fact, I had never even heard about it prior to finding it by sheer random luck on Amazon. I read the synopsis and saw that it had gotten a good score, so I decided to give it a chance. This movie is nothing short of spectacular. It combines all the best things from movies such as "Evil Dead" and "Shaun of the Dead", but it is its very own movie in every aspect. "Deathgasm" is a myriad of assaults on your senses, and it really appeals to us who grew up with horror movies, roleplaying games and metal music. The story is easy to follow, and it offers a lot of entertainment and laughs along the way. Briefly summarized, then it is about a small time local band who stumble upon some very old and mystic pages with lyrics that they turn into a song. But the song calls forth wicked demons and brings havoc to the world around them."Deathgasm" has a lot of good effects. Sure, it is not a CGI fest, like many Hollywood movies have turned into, but it uses its special effects to the best potential, and the effects really serve their purpose quite well."Deathgasm" has some very memorable characters in it, and they are characters that you instantly take a liking to. And that is by means of good writing and also the talented actors and actresses who portrayed them. And while we are on the acting topic, then I will say that the acting in the movie was good, and it was a nice touch to see new faces in a movie such as this. And I will say that the people in the movie really performed quite well, and I hope to get to see more of them in the future.I was thoroughly entertained by "Deathgasm", from start to end, and the movie kicks up into high gear from very early on, and it doesn't release its grip on you before the end credits start to roll on the screen."Deathgasm" is a must watch for fans of the horror comedy genre. This movie landed a rock-solid eight out of ten stars rating from me, without a doubt.

***Minor Spoilers***"Deathgasm" sounds like the stupid title for a stupid movie, yet the ratings and reviews are pretty good for horror, so I checked it out. I was rewarded big time! Turns out, the title is perfect. It really nails the enthusiastically violent nature of the movie, as well as the mentality of the two teen lead characters.Evidently, it's target audience is teenage boys who love metal, but while I'm decades past that, I still loved it. Although there's lots of metal in the film, it's not necessary to love it to enjoy the movie. However, it is necessary to enjoy excessive gore. About the gore, I want to make clear that it is over the top cartoon gore; it is not torture porn. It's not about hurting people, it's about killing demons/monsters. The characters are lovable misfits, there's plenty of funny dialogue and visual humor, and if there's a gorier movie out there, I haven't seen it. For the easily offended, there are truck loads of things to complain about: extremely graphic gore, including genital trimming and a rectal rooting, along with all the usual dismemberments, nudity, though not nearly enough, excessive foul language, irreverent attitudes and more gore. Most of the make up effects and all the gore are practical effects and they're excellent. Some of the digital effects are not great, but they're used minimally and don't detract too much. The overall production design, lighting and cinematography are all very good. It's not a perfect film, but it's so much fun, that it's sins are easy to overlook. The characters are reasonably well developed for this kind of movie, and appropriately shallow. They don't evolve so much as gradually reveal their true natures. Lead, Milo Cawthorn, who was also in the fun and violent "Blood Punch," is very good, again. James Blake, who plays his buddy, is perfect. I had friends like that back when Black Sabbath WAS heavy metal. The lead babe, played by Kimberley Crossman, is luscious and funny. And, "Deathgasm" is digital effects pro, Jason Lei Howden's, directorial debut and it is impressive. These people have long futures in filmmaking. The supporting cast is also very good and funny. Comparisons to Sam Raimi's "Evil Dead," Peter Jackson's "Dead Alive," and Edgar Wright's "Shaun of the Dead" are spot on. All have become classic horror films from first time feature length filmmakers who are still making worthwhile films. My guess is that Howden will become well known and be making entertaining movies for years to come. I would also look for Milo Cawthorn to show up in more prominent movies.Again, lots of fun, but definitely not for the squeamish, the easily offended, or even those who require perfection in order to enjoy a film.
