I'm going to reveal something shocking: Cool As Ice is not that bad. What? Really? Yes. While it doesn't reach the heights of an actual good or even competent movie, it's the fun factor which fuels it.Vanilla Ice gives maybe one of the most awkward performances you'll ever see, but that is part of what is so hilarious. In a movie practically tailormade for you, about how you're the most rebellious and "rad" one in town, tell me with honesty you really wouldn't jump at the chance and enjoy yourself, trying to seem as cool as you possibly could, no matter what everyone else would think. In that way, he's exactly the same as the character in the movie.Long-time Janus Jaminski gives the movie a very wonky, appropriately 90's style look as well. The movie is heavy on the music, and there's a soundtrack throughout which nicely sets up every scene. And while the raps might be cheesy, they could stand quite solidly on their own and work as party tunes. My only problem is when it gets too serious. I'm watching this to laugh, not to see poor Vanilla Ice half-heartedly try to act emotional. But it's not a major detriment to the entertainment, and Michael Gross stands out as the only actor who comes off as convincing. Even when face to face with villains so cartoony you would think you turned over to Disney Channel. There is some hysterical dialogue throughout, but I'm not sure if it's funny because it's well-written dumb comedy, or if it's just funny because it's purely dumb. Either way, it doesn't matter. Because at the end of the day...... just add ice. Drop it!

I was lucky enough to catch this film at the Cannes palm de'olive film and script show in Grimbsy. Settling in my seat i was sceptical as what i would make of Vanilla ice's acting debut, i was not to be disappointed. As soon as the film started you were captivated from the onslaught of this lyrical genius, to put Vanilla into one word as "God" would be an understatement, if he were alive 2000 years ago im sure the disciples would of followed him instead of Jesus, and also had them dancing like the rapper he is while they were fishing. the opening scene lets us delve into the life of Johnny played by Vanilla Ice. his on screen performance grabs you by the throat and doesn't let go, if you can remember de niro in the Russian roulette scene in deer hunter, well multiply it by a million and your still not on par with his acting ability. ONCE YOU SEE HIM PEDDLE UP ON HIS NEON YELLOW MOTORCYCLE, you know your in for a treat, Vanilla plays the rebellious Johnny to a T, from start to finish his one word dialogue is enthralling and hits straight at the guts, with his no-nonsense attitude to life and its rules he sways the non believers to worship his style of rap. I hear this was director David Kellog first film with Mr Ice and hopefully we will see more of his collaboration with the funky ICE ICE BABY. After 90 mins of pure unadulterated rush of adrenaline film script, it was sad to see the credits roll, but the audience at the cinema stood up and gave an ovation to the brilliant mind that is VANILLA. Hopefully there will be a sequel. 10/10

The problem with Vanilla Ice (and also the Anti Ice, aka: MC hammer for that matter) is they were nice guys. Ice looked too nice, he wasn't intimidating, and to be fair you could have introduced him to your mother and father quite easily, no problem. To borrow a phrase "Word to you Mother" - No, you tell her Mr Ice. And he would have done; nicely. Is this film bad? Say, bad as the endless 'found footage' horrors on Netflix/Google Play? No. No it is not. Is it broken? So un-watchable as to hurt? Again, no. So, why the low scores? It's fashionable to hate it. It became fashionable to hate Vanilla Ice - he was by his own admission a sell-out. So, one person says they hate - a lot of people follow. What is wrong then? My main gripe? Vanilla Ice looks uncomfortable playing the part of a rapper. Is he bad singing rapper? What do i know? Let's say, no. Is he bad at playing the part of a mean tough gangster rapper? Yes. yes he is. He's not as tough as he makes out, and it's obvious in this film. He says a lot of things in this film that does not match his face. Occasionally, when he's talking to little kids or out of character, his face lights up, his smile is genuine, and you see the person Mr Ice is comfortable with being: Himself. A nice guy. To add to this his gang (the VIP?) look awkward too, being anything other than nice decent people. Is all the casting a little misaligned? No, not really. Michael Gross, of tremors fame, Naomi Campbell turns up at the start and end, Jack McGee and Sydney Lassick -- they all work fine. Even the little kid, is actually very good. What about the love interest, Kristin Minter? Is she mismatched with the hero Vanilla Ice? No. Is the bad guy, John Newton, unlikable? Yes. What about the arch villains? They work fine. So for what it is, the cast works. To The plot! In a nut shell: Vanilla Ice, urban rapping rebel, saves very nice posh horse riding girl, who likes in nice posh America, from bad controlling boyfriend. At the same time saves girlfriends well todo family from evil villains and proves himself to them -- Through the medium of rap! Ice eventually turns into Scooby Doo and the gang, jumps on his mystery bike, and saves the day. Go white- boy, go white-boy, go!It's a very late 1980s - early 1990s film. Not as brash as the 1980s, not as self-absorbed as the 1990s. Fun but confused. Neon colours, gentler makeup, more natural haircuts and cyber clothing. The odd scene, let's call them music montages, are a wee bit cheesy. Very 1980s, all movies had them in the 80s, these are shoe-horned in and themed like a bad 1990s music video. It's an above-age made for TV movies. No more, no less. I enjoyed it, for what it was. To the extreme!
