I like the main character "Sister Mary Clarence" she is full of good spirit yet naughty
... View MoreThis movie is absolutely brilliant! It's stuffed with great humor and a well-done plot, as well as original characters and acting that looks real. In some places, I could not stop laughing. The best part, in my opinion, was where the sisters were off to rescue the main character and needed a plane. The pilot wouldn't budge, so they started praying things like, "Father, do not blame this pilot for abandoning us in our hour of need," and "Please do not treat him with the same disregard that he's treated us," right in front of his face! I really liked the youngest nun, who was shy but sweet, along with the plump one, who was always cheerful. However, it's rated PG--parental guidance--for a reason. This movie is not like Cinderella 2015 or Finding Dory, which were also PG but still real friendly; you seriously need to have parental guidance. It's not just there being "dam*" and "hel*" in the movie, nor is it that there are guns. Some things get a little edgy in the direction of sex. Otherwise than the reasons it's rated PG, this movie is great and definitely a must-see!
... View MoreWhoopie Goldberg dominates every scene. She is a woman of "questionable" character who finds herself in a convent, a true fish out of water. Her dominance on the screen is actually a distraction, however, because she stands in contrast to a group of competent actors who can't hold a candle to her. The sisters of the convent are a bunch of stereotypes. There is the shy one, the giddy crazy one, the severe mother superior, the somewhat irresponsible one. As Whoopie is absorbed into this new life, she begins to show her musical talents, forming a choir. I'm not religious at all, but there is something really crass about taking a group that have given their lives to God that doesn't wash very well. When they sing, they start out with the usual religious stuff but soon move into a more secular, upbeat presentation. It's as if the new arrival is saying, you need to go back to the world you left to give yourself to your God. I know it's a harsh comedy because there are people out there ready to kill Whoopie, but if I were Catholic I'd be a bit annoyed. It plays to the movie audience that thinks, boy those Nuns certainly have a great time! Watchable but hard to fathom as reality.
... View MoreSister Act (1992) is a smart well made comedy with great characters. Whoopi Goldberg really plays her starring role Dolores well, she is touching, delightful, entertaining, and hilarious when she needs to be. Maggie smith is awesome too! She is smart, funny, and fits the role very well. Kathy Najimy is absolutely hilarious here! When she sings so horribly at first, I was in the floor dying laughing, her Comedy just really works in this movie. The writing here is great, it's comedic style just works so well with the actors and their performances. The characters are also just so incredibly lovable, you automatically sympathize with them and pull hard for them. This film really works due to the writing and the performances, that's what lifts it up. Well that and the singing, the fun hip gospel that Whoopi inspires in this convent. This film is just a good time to have, It'll make you laugh and fell heart warmed at the same time. 8/10 for sister act.
