While no masterpiece of horror, May tells the story of perhaps the most relatable psycho in the modern slasher genre. Unlike Freddy Krueger or Mike Myers from Halloween, you witness May experiencing bullying as a child as a result of a lazy eye and wearing a patch, at becoming friendless, outcast and awkward. She grows up to be a weird woman who longs for friendship, intimacy and a boyfriend. Sex too. May becomes infatuated with Adam, a film school dropout and has a sexual fling. But he is turned off at her kink for red and the relationship ends. Rejected, in a tantrum she brutalizes her doll collection. (Quite honestly I know Sri Lankan girl called Savithri who's reacted more psychopathic than that!)Driven by her desire to get back with Adam, she begins to stalk him, calling him and leaving awkward and weird phone messages. (Again something many woman might relate to, am I right ladies?!) Eventually when her favourite doll is destroyed her obsession spirals out of control. She kills her cat and stuffs it in the freezer and goes on a killing spree killing a lesbian co-worker and her girlfriend. Eventually she murders Adam too. Carting their body parts in an icebox she takes them home to sew together a friend. In the end, to give it life, she cuts out one of her own eyes. Aww. Honestly, how can you not feel for poor little ol' May?

A-Z Horror Movie of the Day..."May" (R - 2002 - US)Sub-Genre: Psycho/GoreMy Score: 7.8Cast=6 Acting=8 Plot=7 Ending=9 Story=8 Scare=8 Jump=6 F/X=8 Psycho=10 Gore=8A lonely young woman traumatized by a difficult childhood, and her increasingly desperate attempts to connect with the people around her."So, are we like best friends now that you've seen what's in my freezer?" She really pushed that Pretty to Crazy ratio to the limit!! It started off slow and was just plain weird. Once the case broke, so did May. It was at this point that the violence ensued and the movie hit a whole other level!! When you watch this one...just remember, If you can't find a friend, make one!!!

May wants a friend. May needs a friend. The only friend she has is her doll, completely enclosed in a glass case. Her mother informs her that the doll is "special" and cannot be removed from the case. She also has a wandering eye which keeps her from connecting with other people. Her mother taught her from a young age that no one wants to be friends with a girl who has a lazy eye.May spends her days working at the local animal hospital and her nights sewing her own clothes and talking to her only friend, her doll. She is waiting for a connection with another person but is much too socially awkward to do anything about it.Then one day she meets Adam, whose hands she becomes obsessed with. She immediately falls in love with Adam and sets out to win his heart. She gets contacts to correct her wandering eye. She sews up some sexy clothes to wear around him and makes herself available around him. They begin dating but it soon becomes apparent to Adam that May is too weird for his tastes. So begins May's downward spiral. This is where actress Angela Bettis really shines. She immerses herself so much in the role that we see a true breakdown of epic proportions. We feel May's pain and loneliness yet we see why the people around her ultimately reject her. Writer/director Lucky McKee has crafted a superior tale of longing for acceptance and trying to fit in. May wants to be normal and connect with people but her upbringing has shaped her in such a way as for this to be practically impossible. When May lets her sexy co-worker Polly, played by Anna Farris in possibly her best role, seduce her, she feels that maybe she has finally made a connection but is ultimately let down again when Polly falls for the gorgeous Ambrosia and leaves May by the wayside.Ultimately May's doll breaks and she must find a new friend, or make her own...This is writer/director McKee's first solo effort and he really shines. He has crafted a tale that is appealing to the socially awkward, and those that don't fit in, and depicts a frightening and murderous descent into madness. 9/10.

it's a good psychological horror. the pacing is a little slow, but if you're patient it's worth it. a lot of the characters who aren't the main are still pretty fleshed out, which is cool. most of the actors are good, the ending is cool and a little confusing, it's a bit gory but not too much. may is a very interesting character, and her descent into madness is pretty creepy and tense to watch. there are a few events that are genuinely disturbing. most of the movie is about building it up for the ending events, though, so don't expect the action to start for a while. that fact might make it a bit difficult to watch for the average viewer or those with a poor attention span, although i have adhd and was still engaged in the plot the entire time, because it is a really interesting plot, and the characters are very intriguing. it's a shame that the movie didn't get very much attention at the time of its release. wouldn't recommend it for anyone under 16
