Conan's problem's start almost straight away and so do the film's, with the picture somehow managing to be remarkably boring even when it's doing all of the brutal, sword-and-no-sandals action it's entirely based around. It remains bizarrely barren for the majority of its run-time. While Schwarzenegger certainly looked the part, with legend telling that he couldn't even initially hold the sword with two hands due to the size of his biceps and pecs, his acting left something to be desired and so did his character. This will make you long for his comparatively Oscar-worthy work in later films or the performances in which he literally plays a robot. There's a constant disconnect from the world in 'Conan The Barbarian (1982)' and its inhabitants, which makes for an incredibly passive viewing experience that lacks the engagement or spectacle to make it even a 'B-movie' fascination, just a dull one. 4/10

John Milius's Conan the Barbarian is a gritty visceral epic which kickstarted the "swords and sandals" sub-genre in the early 80s. Arnold Schwarzenegger is in top form in a film that catapulted him into the stratosphere and a year later he would go onto star in the Terminator, cementing his arrival as leading man. Milius is such a good director and it seems war and moral codes are running through his veins. The cinematography is good as is the score and one scene in particular- the kitchen orgy sequence is awe inspiring in its outlandish transpiring. If you like historical epics, then Conan the Barbarian is a great film to wind down with.

It's so ridiculous that it's funny. That's the only reason I gave it 2 stars, because I had a good laugh.

So the film really surprised me. Large parts of the film come out completely without words one understands nevertheless all the Derby is not really great but very fast to savvy and very linear. The fights are really good that is a really classy male film but nevertheless all the women that can be found in there so also strike all SWJ and the the claim there are no strong women characters should necessarily look at this movie here and listen to the music the best I have ever heard in my life.
