This is my first Abbott and Costello(A&C) monster movie, so I can't make comparisons. It begins with the observation that "A man's best friend is his mummy". At a café, a very vigorous acrobatic act is featured involving 3 women and a man doing flips, spins, jumps and other stunts. Very impressive!.. Later, a French-speaking Café showgirl(Veola Vonn) exits the Café, and begins jabbering to Lou, saying she won't give him her phone number or address, then giving both on a slip of paper. Very Funny....Later, at a Café, Peggy King sings a nice rendition of "You Came a Long Way From St. Louis".A&C need a way home to the US from Egypt. They learn that Dr. Zoomer has discovered the mummy of Klaris, and needs 2 men to help transport it to the US. They go to Dr. Zoomer to apply for this job. But, others don't want the mummy to leave Egypt, and the boys find Zoomer(Kurt Katch) murdered in his office. The body keeps being moved every time the boys leave the room, freaking Costello out. Lou accidentally discovers a sacred medallion, that falls out of an artifact he picks up. They learn that this was thought to be in the mummy's sarcophagus, so why one group wanted to steal the sarcophagus. But, the boys learn that many people are afraid of it, saying it brings bad luck and possible death. But, a Madame Rontru(Marie Windsor) wants to buy it, even for $5000., as Abbott suggests. He doesn't know that it is said to include instructions for finding the sarcophagus of Princess Ara, and the presumed treasures it includes. They agree to meet at a Café to seal the bargain. A&C arrive first, and are reminded that people fear the medallion. Thus, Abbott and Lou keep sneaking it into the other's pocket when they are distracted. Then, one places it in one of the 2 hamburgers they ordered, and they keep switching burghers back and forth. Finally, Lou agrees to eat the 'hot' burgher. We hear it crunching as he eats. When, Madame Rontru arrives, she is greatly displeased at this development, and has Costello stand in front of a fluoroscope to try to see the medallion. After shaking him up, they get a better view of the medallion, but can't read hieroglyphics. But Semu, who heads a Klaris-worshiping cult, arrives, claiming to be an archaeologist who can read hieroglyphics. He takes all to a tomb, but they have to find the sarcophagus. He's planning on killing the others, but Madame Rontru captures him first. Later, Costello frees him. A&C have quite a merry time exploring the tomb's many passageways, and scary features. At one point, Lou is scared out of his wits by the mummy, and coughs up the medallion(whole!) The mummy takes the medallion. Abbott, as well as one of Madame Rontru's goons, dress up like the mummy(not sure why), and we have 3 mummies to come together at one point. Rontru can't decide which is the real one, so shoots at them, hitting only the real one, who keeps coming at her. Some sticks of dynamite are accidentally lite and tossed around from one person to another. Finally, they are caught by the mummy, and explode, blowing the mummy and medallion to bits. But, the blast also uncovered the sarcophagus they were looking for, and presumably some treasures.Next, we see the outside of the new Café Klaris, presumably built with money gotten for the treasures. The band members are all dressed as mummies. I won't reveal the rest of the finale, which is the last bit of footage of the boys distributed by Universal: the 28th film with them.

This is a very funny movie. It is also scarier. I really I have to say it is scarier then The Shining. And that is not easy to do. It is not has scary has The Mummy's hand mind you. And not has scarier has The Mummy's tomb. It is also not has scary has The Mummy's ghost. Also it not scary has The Mummy's cure . The Mummy's cure is one of the scariest movie of all time. This is one of the funniest of all time. It has great acting. It also has great special effects. It also has a great story line. 6.5 is a good ratting. But this is such a great movie that 6.5 is underrating.

Abbott and Costello were a popular comedy team in the early 40s, with their dumbed-down burlesques of life in the Army or Navy. Occasionally they'd branch out, when Universal Studios let them, and make a film of more substance -- and funnier -- as in "The Time of Their Lives." But after a few years they began to fade, until they were revivified with "Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein" in 1948. Universal's monster genre, which began in the early 30s, had run its course and there was nothing left to do but parody them, and Abbott and Costello were the instruments of that parody. Here we are in 1955, with "Abbott and Costello Meet the Mummy" and it's the dead edge of yonder for both the comedy team and the line up of monsters. You can't parody a parody. This may be the only film -- it was the next to their last -- in which Bud Abbott is almost as thick as Lou Costello. Abbott's voice is harsher and a little gravelly. When he insults Costello or order him around, it's a little unpleasant because he doesn't sound like a vaudeville straight man anymore; he sounds really mean. The story is dispensable except for Marie Windsor. What is she doing here, taking a vacation from being a moll? She looks mighty fine, in an Ileana Douglas sort of way, with those big and inviting eyes. Yes, eyes. Nobody else really counts. And the plot redoes some earlier successful gags. The "Who's on first" routine here is morphed into a lesser breed of gag involving "pick a shovel." I used to get a kick out of Abbott and Costello when I was a kid, and maybe the kids would find all this running around, being chased by thieves and mummies, bumping into dead bodies, and so forth, amusing. Although -- I don't know. I'm not attuned to the tastes of today's kids but my general impression is that they prefer violence to comedy or, better yet, slaughter that is presented as a joke.

This is the last hurrah for Universal Pictures from the dynamic duo of Bud & Lou. Tho the film finds them long past their best, with the overall material having to be severely stretched to sustain a feature length movie, it does however have some merit. The plot sees the lads mixed up in a murder mystery with an Egyptian cult. Cue lots of Mummy like staple scenario's as our bumbling duo bluster their way thru by luck more than any sort of guile. In the hands of lesser comedians this production would have sank without trace, but such is the vibrancy and comedic knowing of the pair the film at least remains watchable to the end. It may well find them on auto-pilot, but a couple of scenes show why they were such well loved comedians. With medallion hamburgers and a triple whammy of Mummies for the typically frenetic finale, the movie, if not even close to doing justice to their great careers, does remain engaging and thankfully stays above average. 6/10
