I've seen most of the reviews (mostly about weight and insecurity). Is anyone going to stop ignoring the fact that some of us like the "Fat" Hanna? She was so adorable, kind, and a really amazing person in general (besides what she did for a living on the phone, but that's just my opinion). Kim Ah Joong is pretty, but, in the movie as Jenny, she changed into someone awful over time. I guess she made up for it at the end. I wanted to see more of the old Hanna. Weight didn't really matter to me. Besides, either way, if you're pretty or ugly, you get made fun of anyways. For some who don't know, people get called "sl**" and "wh***" for being "pretty". For "ugly" people, they get made fun of for being "ugly". It'd be easier if people would stop doing that. It's kind of ridiculous, really, to push someone to change how they look. Anyways, Sang-jun was a very complicated person. He was nice, and then, he was shallow and mean. Then, he was nice again. It's repetitive. The movie was interesting overall.
... View More"200 Pounds Beauty" (aka "Minyeo-neun goerowo") sort of is a modern day Cinderella story, although with a twist. And it does differentiate itself from the numerous South Korean romantic comedy movies, which in itself in an impressive feat.Director Yong-Hwa Kim has managed to put together a great romantic comedy that didn't follow the standard recipe of how to make a successful rom-com. As such, "200 Pounds Beauty" was a nice breath of fresh air to the genre.Think Cinderella and you have the core essence of the movie. Han-na (played by Ah-Jung Kim) is a large singer who is doing the singing for a lip syncing popstar, hidden away because of her size and appearance. Undergoing full cosmetic surgery Han-na becomes everything she dreamed of, but she loses herself along the way and turns into what she always hated. This comedy is not the kind that will leave you flat out laughing, but instead it is a good story with subtle comedy that will make you feel good. The nice storyline is accompanied by equally nice acting performances.A big thumbs up to Ah-Jung Kim for her performance in this movie. She really did carry the movie quite nicely."200 Pounds Beauty" is a benchmark in the South Korean romantic comedy genre, and it is a must watch if you enjoy this particular genre. It is a beautiful movie that will leave a lasting impression. Highly recommended that you sit down to watch this movie.
... View MoreI stumbled onto it by way of having seen Kim Ah Jung in something else she was funny in. At any rate when I heard there was going to be a sequel to this my first thought was how? For that matter how could they possibly have kept the Japanese comic that inspired this movie going with a premise that's pretty much a mishmash betwixt Cyrano De Bergerac and Eddie Murphy's remake of The Nutty Professor but without the scifi angle. I'm always amazed at how Japanese comic artists can keep their series going well into the hundreds what would only last 2 seasons here would last well beyond it there just because their writers are so creative with their plot twists and development. There are spoilers in this review so read on if you want to be spoiled. As for the aforementioned comparison to Cyrano De Bergerac? Much like Cyrano, Kang Han na is or at least deems herself hideous and as such decides to stay out of the lime light while she let's someone else take the credit for her singing much like Cyrano De Bergerac allowed the guy who was his rival take credit for the poetry he wrote. In further comparison to Cyrano De Bergerac is how Kang Han na post-surgery sticks up for a voyeur with his camera by stating that she understands exactly how he felt when really it was how she felt. Then there's the whole secret love interest angle that's so obviously Cyrano albeit with the engendered roles switched (Kang Han na's a woman after all not a man).Much like the Nutty Professor she was obsessed over trying to find ways to lose her weight just to get her love interest to love her. First with diet pills then she ultimately turned to science albeit in the form of plastic surgery but not a scifi special serum. That being said there's nary a fart-joke here so you've been warned. But Kim Ah Jung can sing who knew. My favorite is the Beautiful Girl song with Maria being a close second I guess. With that being said once I saw this movie to its end I could definitely see some natural problems pop-up that could feed into the sequel. I mean women get fat after getting pregnant right? I suspect once her bf gets over the whole plastic surgery thing she'll be pregnant with his baby. I also suspect she'd gain the weight back so that she'd be back to 200+ pounds. That being said since she's not necessarily used to the concept of dieting or exercising to lose weight I imagine that would be a struggle in addition to maintaining her newly restarted singing career. Not only that but the impending delivery of the baby and her increased appetite in addition to the contractions and her water breaking. These are natural problems. I don't think he'd leave her because I don't think he's really that shallow. Oh and if they wanted to they could add fart-jokes here too pregnant have gas too but I suspect they won't. The really important thing is that they keep the heart in there in addition to the comedy, the good music, and the overall feel good nature that you get in the end.
... View MoreStoryline ? Simple, common, and predictable like most of this kinda romantic comedies are. However i do not hesitate giving this film 10 stars, which does NOT mean this is equal to my other 10 star films like Godfather or Taxi Driver, but means this is at the highest for its own genre. Well scripted, superbly directed and paced, lots of funny scenes & emotional scenes, and the soundtrack is quite good also. You can laugh, think, and even cry in 2 hours, and you will feel good after the watch. What can we expect more for romantic comedy ?And what makes this film more special is the heroine(Hanna/Jenny), Kim Ah-jung. Wow.. She's so beautiful, cute, sexy, can act and sing. She performed this difficult role PERFECTLY. -- Spoiler --And what makes me love this film even more is that this film DOES NOT forcibly try to give viewers clichéd messages. Yes, it says "The inside is important", but it does not say "Appearance is nothing but the shell" or something which most of general people like us cannot overcome anyway. Even after the watch of this film, most of us shall still like externally sexy person than '200 pounds beauty' if both has same insides. The film knows it and face it. A dialog between Sang-jun & his associate guy at the very last part of film is PRICELESS summary of all this. Guy : Sang-jun, why do you like her ? Is it because she's pretty ? Sang-jun : SOB like you would say that Guy : Then it's because she's innocent ? Sang-jun : (Smiles and says) SOB like me would say that..
